Former Chelsea FC captain Cesar Azpilicueta has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
The 36-year-old defender, who is currently playing for Sevilla FC, confirmed the decision through a message shared on social media on Friday.
After so many years living my dream, I feel it's time to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta said.
I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
Azpilicueta will play the final match of his career when Sevilla travel to face RC Celta de Vigo on Saturday.
The versatile Spaniard enjoyed a highly successful spell at Chelsea after joining the London club from Olympique de Marseille in 2012. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won two Premier League titles and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy while also serving as club captain.
Known for his consistency and leadership, Azpilicueta played across multiple defensive positions, featuring as a right-back, centre-back and left-back throughout his career.
Before moving to France and England, the defender began his professional journey with CA Osasuna in Spain.
Following more than a decade with Chelsea, Azpilicueta joined Atletico Madrid in 2023 before signing for Sevilla last summer.
On the international stage, the experienced defender earned 44 caps for Spain national football team and was part of one of the country’s respected football generations.
