For the fourth consecutive year, Real Madrid failed to win at the Estadio de Vallecas after being held to a 0-0 draw by a spirited Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Despite controlling possession and creating several half-chances, the league leaders couldn’t find a breakthrough against their resilient hosts, who themselves came close on multiple occasions.
The tone was set early as Arda Guler tested Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla from distance within minutes of kickoff. At the other end, Andrei Ratiu burst down the right flank in the 20th minute, only to see his powerful effort saved comfortably by Thibaut Courtois when he might have squared for a teammate.
Real responded almost immediately Vinícius Júnior forced a fine stop from Batalla before Marco Asensio narrowly failed to convert a diving header from Brahim Díaz’s curling cross. Those moments, however, were rare glimpses of attacking cohesion in a first half dominated by midfield duels and five bookings shared between the sides.
After the break, the tempo increased. Guler again came close with a dipping effort that skimmed past the post, while Kylian Mbappé flashed a right-footed shot narrowly wide on the hour mark. Rayo refused to sit back, and Álvaro García squandered perhaps the best chance of the game, sending a close-range shot over the bar from Ratiu’s delivery.
Courtois and Batalla were both called into action late on the latter denying Federico Valverde’s driven attempt in the 70th minute but as the match wore on, space became scarce and frustration grew for the visitors. Guler’s late solo run, halted by Pep Chavarría at the death, summed up Real’s evening: bright moments but no final product.
The result means Rayo Vallecano remain 12th in LaLiga, while Real Madrid stay top, though their grip tightens only slightly after dropping points once again at their city rivals’ ground..
