Tusker FC's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup suffered another setback after the Kenyan side lost 1-0 to hosts Rayon Sports on Wednesday evening in Kigali.

The defeat was the Brewers' second successive loss in Group C following their 2-0 opening defeat to Sudanese giants Al-Hilal, leaving them with no points and facing an uphill task to qualify for the semi-finals.
Head coach Julien Mette made six changes to the starting line-up in a bid to revive Tusker's campaign. Brandon Obiero, Abud Omar, Chrispine Erambo, Fabian Adikiny, Stephen Etyang and Victor Mbaoma retained their places, while Servyl Akouala Amuor, Aboubacar Doumbia, John Otieno, Abdoulie Joof, December Kisakah and Steve Omondi were handed starting roles.
The changes saw Eugene Ikutwa, Thomas Teka, Warsama Hassan, Collins Ochieng', Ian Simiyu and Yakeen Muteheli begin the match on the bench.
Backed by a vocal home crowd, Rayon Sports controlled large spells of the contest and eventually found the decisive goal to claim all three points. Despite showing greater organisation than they did against Al-Hilal, Tusker struggled to create clear scoring opportunities and could not break down a disciplined Rayon Sports defence.
The Brewers have now conceded three goals without scoring in their opening two matches, highlighting their attacking struggles at the regional tournament.
The latest defeat leaves Tusker's qualification hopes hanging by a thread. Mette's side must now beat Zanzibar's KVZ SC in their final Group C fixture while hoping other results go their way to stand any chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Tusker travelled to Rwanda seeking to reclaim the CECAFA Kagame Cup title they have won a record five times, but consecutive defeats have left the Kenyan representatives staring at an early exit.
After two rounds of matches, Al-Hilal Omdurman and Rayon Sports share top spot in Group C with six points each. Tusker remain without a point and carry a goal difference of minus three, while Tanzania's Simba SC currently hold the advantage in the race for the best third-placed qualification spot with a superior goal difference.
Before the team departed for the tournament, club chairman Charles Gacheru said the competition would serve as an important preparation platform ahead of the new season and the CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
The tournament will help us prepare for both the league and the CAF Confederation Cup because it features some of the best teams in the region. CECAFA is giving us an opportunity to play high-intensity matches that we would otherwise not have within this short period," Gacheru said.
These highly competitive games will help us understand where we are as a team and whether we are ready for the new season.
While Tusker's hopes of making a deep run in the regional competition have faded after back-to-back defeats, the Brewers will be determined to finish their campaign on a positive note when they face KVZ SC in their final group match.
