Rose Kadzere scored the decisive goal in the second half as the tournament debutants continued a remarkable run that has already included victories over defending champions Nigeria and Egypt.
The result guarantees Malawi one of Africa’s four automatic qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Having topped Group C in their maiden WAFCON appearance, the Scorchers entered the quarter-final carrying confidence from an impressive group-stage campaign.
Ghana, seeking a return to the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2007, made the stronger start and opened the scoring after only seven minutes.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah produced a composed finish to give the Black Queens an early advantage and put them on course for a place in the semi-finals.

Their persistence eventually produced the decisive moment in the 79th minute.
Kadzere found space inside the penalty area and calmly finished beyond the Ghana goalkeeper to put Malawi 2-1 ahead.
Ghana pushed players forward during the closing stages in an attempt to force extra time, but Malawi held firm under pressure.
The final whistle sparked celebrations as the Scorchers confirmed both their place in the WAFCON semi-finals and an historic first appearance at a FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Malawi’s achievement represents a remarkable breakthrough for a team competing at the continental tournament for the first time.
The Scorchers have exceeded expectations throughout the competition and have now defeated several of Africa’s established women’s football nations on their way to the last four.
For Ghana, the quarter-final defeat ended their hopes of securing automatic World Cup qualification through WAFCON.
The Black Queens, however, still have an opportunity to reach Brazil 2027 through the qualification play-offs.
Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire in the African play-off, with the winner progressing to the FIFA Women’s World Cup intercontinental play-offs.
Malawi can now turn their attention to the WAFCON semi-finals knowing they have already achieved one of the biggest milestones in the country’s football history.
