Arsenal opened their 2026-27 Premier League campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were all on target as Mikel Arteta’s side made a confident start to their title defence.
Coventry, returning to the Premier League after an absence of more than 25 years, began brightly but soon discovered the level required against the defending champions.
Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 15th minute after Christos Tzolis pressured Milan van Ewijk into an error.
Riccardo Calafiori quickly collected the loose ball and found Havertz, who guided a first-time finish into the far corner to give the Gunners the lead.
The goal continued Havertz’s impressive scoring run, with the Germany international finding the net in a fourth successive start for the first time in his English career.
Arsenal needed only eight more minutes to double their advantage.
Tzolis was again heavily involved, receiving the ball on the left before delivering a low cross towards goal.
Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth managed to get a hand to the delivery but could only push it into the path of Saka, who calmly rolled the rebound into an empty net from close range.
The goal gave Arsenal complete control as Coventry struggled to create meaningful opportunities at the other end.
Arteta’s side went into half-time with a 2-0 lead after producing 1.29 expected goals compared to Coventry’s 0.04 during the opening period.
Any hopes of a second-half Coventry comeback were effectively ended four minutes after the restart.
Saka combined with Ben White down the right before the full-back pulled the ball back towards Odegaard.
The Arsenal captain’s effort was not struck cleanly, but it wrong-footed Rushworth and found its way into the net to make it 3-0.
Arsenal continued to dominate possession and looked capable of adding further goals.
Tzolis remained one of the hosts’ most dangerous players, testing Rushworth from distance and repeatedly finding space around the Coventry defence.
The summer signing received a warm reception when he was replaced by Eberechi Eze in the 76th minute following an impressive Premier League debut.
Arteta also introduced Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Piero Hincapie as Arsenal managed their advantage during the closing stages.
Coventry produced their clearest opportunity in the 86th minute when Jack Rudoni met Victor Torp’s cross, but his header went straight into David Raya’s hands.
The visitors were unable to find a consolation as Arsenal completed the match with a clean sheet and all three points.
The final result represented a strong opening statement from the reigning champions, who had also beaten Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield before the start of the league campaign.
Arsenal will now prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, while Coventry turn their attention to an EFL Cup meeting with Plymouth Argyle before hosting Hull City in their first home league match of the season.
