Crystal Palace Win Historic Conference League Final In Glasner Farewell

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal as Crystal Palace defeated Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig, handing Oliver Glasner a perfect farewell and securing another historic European triumph for the Eagles.

Crystal Palace completed another historic chapter in the club’s rise under Oliver Glasner after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the match early in the second half to hand Palace their third major trophy in just two seasons and send outgoing manager Oliver Glasner off in unforgettable fashion.

The French striker reacted quickest after Adam Wharton’s powerful strike had been pushed into his path by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, calmly converting from close range six minutes after the restart at the Red Bull Arena.

It was Mateta’s 16th goal of the season and perhaps his most important in Palace colours as the South London club secured European silverware for the first time in their history.

Both Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano were playing in their first-ever European final and nerves were evident during a cautious opening period. Chances were limited before the break, although Palace came closest when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide from a brilliant Wharton delivery.

Rayo Vallecano threatened briefly after going behind, with Yeremy Pino striking both posts from a free-kick before later creating another opportunity for Mateta at the other end, only for Batalla to produce an excellent save.

Despite late pressure from the Spanish side, Palace remained composed defensively and comfortably saw out the victory to spark emotional celebrations among the travelling supporters.

The triumph capped a remarkable two-and-a-half-year spell for Glasner, who leaves Selhurst Park after transforming Palace into serial trophy winners. Before his arrival in February 2024, the Eagles had never won a major trophy. Since then, they have lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield and now the UEFA Conference League.

Glasner achieved the feat despite losing key players in recent transfer windows, including Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and Marc Guehi to Manchester City. Yet Palace continued to evolve into one of England’s most competitive sides under the Austrian coach.

Mateta’s resurgence has been one of the biggest success stories of Glasner’s tenure. The striker had scored just 11 goals in 80 appearances before the manager’s arrival but leaves this season with 46 goals in 110 matches under the Austrian.

Ironically, Mateta nearly departed the club in January before a knee injury halted a proposed move to AC Milan. That setback has now proven to be a blessing for Palace, with the striker becoming a fan favourite once again while also earning a place in France’s World Cup squad.

Adam Wharton also produced another outstanding display in midfield just days after the disappointment of missing out on England’s World Cup squad. His creativity and composure proved crucial throughout the final and highlighted why he remains one of England’s brightest young talents.

Palace’s European journey this season was far from straightforward. Ownership complications forced them to drop from the Europa League into the Conference League, while a shock FA Cup defeat to non-league Macclesfield and a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish added further frustration.

However, none of that mattered on a glorious night in Leipzig as Palace secured Europa League qualification for next season and added another trophy to the club’s rapidly growing collection.

Crystal Palace also became the second English club to win a European trophy this season following Aston Villa’s Europa League success, while Arsenal now have the chance to complete an English treble in Europe when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.
