FKF Postpones Premier League Opener as Fresh Crisis Deepens

The 2026/27 FKF Premier League will not kick off as scheduled after the federation postponed all Round One matches between August 31 and September 2 to allow further consultations with clubs and league sponsors.

The start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League has been postponed just days after Football Kenya Federation confirmed the new season was ready to begin.

All Round One fixtures scheduled between Monday, August 31, and Wednesday, September 2, have been called off, returning clubs to uncertainty over when the new campaign will finally get underway.

FKF informed clubs and stakeholders that the postponement was necessary to allow further discussions involving the federation, participating teams and the league's sponsors.

The Kenya Premier League 2026/27 Round One Fixtures scheduled to be played between Monday, 31st August 2026 and Wednesday, 2nd September 2026 have been postponed,” the federation said in its communication.

FKF said the consultations are expected to provide direction on how the competition will be managed during the upcoming season.

This is so as to allow for deliberations between the Federation, participating Clubs and the League sponsors that’ll provide direction and guidance on the management of the League for the upcoming Season,” the communication added.

The decision represents another dramatic turn for a campaign whose opening had only recently appeared to have been secured following weeks of administrative and legal uncertainty.

Eight matches had been lined up across the opening three days.

Newly promoted 3K FC were due to launch the season against Mara Sugar at Moi Stadium in Embu on Monday, while Mathare United were scheduled to face APS Bomet at Police Sacco Stadium.

Tuesday's programme included Ulinzi Stars against Tusker at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

National Super League champions Migori Youth were preparing for their top-flight opener against Kenya Police at Green Stadium in Awendo, while defending league champions Gor Mahia were due to begin their title defence against Murang'a SEAL at Nyayo National Stadium.

The opening round was scheduled to conclude on Wednesday with Nairobi United facing KCB at Police Sacco Stadium, Posta Rangers meeting Shabana at Wang'uru Stadium and AFC Leopards hosting Bandari at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

All those fixtures must now be rearranged.

The postponement comes despite a recent High Court ruling in Murang'a that allowed FKF to proceed with the new campaign using the federation's 2019 Rules and Regulations on an interim basis.

The legal dispute revolves partly around conflicting promotion and relegation frameworks.

Under the 2019 regulations, the bottom two Premier League clubs are automatically relegated and replaced by the top two National Super League teams, while another top-flight club enters a promotion-relegation play-off.

A revised 2025 framework introduced a different system in which three Premier League teams would be automatically relegated and three NSL clubs promoted directly, removing the play-off.

The attempted application of the revised regulations became the subject of legal challenges, with affected clubs questioning how the rules had been introduced.

Court proceedings and decisions involving the Sports Disputes Tribunal and High Court subsequently complicated efforts to determine the composition and regulations governing the new Premier League season.

The High Court's latest intervention appeared to provide a temporary pathway for the competition to start under the older regulations while the wider case continues.

However, the latest FKF circular makes clear that resolving the legal question alone has not been enough to begin the season.

Discussions are now continuing between the federation, Premier League clubs and commercial partners over the administration and management of the competition.

The delay will create further challenges for teams that had already adjusted their preparations to the previously announced August 31 kickoff.

Clubs have completed much of their pre-season work, assembled squads, signed players and planned travel and matchday arrangements based on the opening schedule.

Those preparations must now be adjusted again without a confirmed replacement date.

The uncertainty also affects clubs preparing for continental football, with domestic competition normally providing important competitive preparation before CAF assignments.

FKF has told clubs and stakeholders that both a revised Round One programme and the complete season fixture list will be communicated “within the shortest time possible.”

Until that happens, the 2026/27 FKF Premier League remains officially on hold.

The latest postponement means attention will once again turn to negotiations between FKF, the clubs and sponsors as Kenyan football waits for a final agreement capable of allowing the new top-flight campaign to begin.
