Saka Fires Arsenal Past Aston Villa to Maintain Perfect Start

The defending champions were made to work considerably harder than in their opening 3-0 victory over Coventry City, but Saka’s close-range finish in the 59th minute proved enough to secure all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.

It was Arsenal’s fifth consecutive season winning their first Premier League away match without conceding, while Villa were left without a point or a goal from their opening two fixtures.

Villa entered the contest seeking a response after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Brighton on the opening weekend.

Unai Emery handed goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and record signing Nicolas Jackson their Villa debuts, while Arteta retained the same Arsenal starting XI that beat Coventry.

The hosts made a positive start and came closest to breaking the deadlock during the opening half.

Emiliano Buendia unleashed a powerful effort from more than 25 yards in the 11th minute that beat David Raya but clipped the top of the crossbar.

Arsenal gradually gained control of possession but struggled to turn their dominance into clear opportunities.

Declan Rice threatened from a set-piece, while Kai Havertz and Saka struggled to find space against an organised Villa defence.

Christos Tzolis also endured a difficult first half and was booked after pulling back Matty Cash in the 29th minute.

Despite enjoying 66 percent possession, Arsenal failed to register a shot on target before half-time.

Villa were similarly unable to test Raya directly, although Buendia’s effort against the woodwork remained the best chance of the opening 45 minutes.

Arteta responded by replacing Tzolis with Eberechi Eze at half-time, a change that helped Arsenal offer greater movement down the left side.

The visitors thought they had been awarded a penalty in the 54th minute when Ian Maatsen collided with Saka as the England international moved into the area.

However, VAR determined that the initial contact had taken place just outside the penalty box, and the decision was changed to a free-kick. Martin Odegaard sent the resulting effort narrowly wide.

Arsenal did not have to wait much longer for the breakthrough.

Four minutes later, Eze combined with Riccardo Calafiori during a slick move down the left.

Calafiori stretched to send a low ball across the six-yard area, where Saka arrived to slide a first-time finish beyond Suzuki.

It was Arsenal’s first shot on target of the match and Saka’s second Premier League goal of the season.

The goal also meant Saka had scored in consecutive league appearances for the first time since November 2024.

Arsenal became increasingly comfortable after taking the lead and began managing possession more effectively as Villa searched for a response.

Arteta introduced Bruno Guimaraes for his Premier League debut for Arsenal in the 71st minute, with Myles Lewis-Skelly making way.

Mikel Merino was also introduced for Odegaard as the champions strengthened their midfield for the closing stages.

Villa responded by sending on Tammy Abraham, Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka among several changes.

Former Villa defender Ezri Konsa was later introduced for Arsenal after Cristhian Mosquera was forced off, receiving a mixed reception on his return to Villa Park.

The home side enjoyed more possession towards the end but continued to struggle to provide their attackers with meaningful opportunities.

Villa reached the closing stages having still failed to register a shot on target, continuing an attacking problem that has followed them through the opening two matches.

There was a late VAR check for a possible penalty after Maatsen challenged Guimaraes, but officials supported the referee’s original decision that no foul worthy of a spot-kick had occurred.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory and another clean sheet for the champions.

They have now lost their opening two Premier League matches without scoring, something they had not done since 2002. They also failed to produce a shot on target for the second successive game.

Arsenal, meanwhile, move on with two victories from two as they prepare for a major London derby against Chelsea on Sunday.

Villa will seek their first points of the season when they travel to face early surprise package Hull City on Saturday.
