Mombasa United claimed a valuable 2-1 victory over Kariobangi Sharks in the first leg of their FKF Premier League promotion and relegation playoff at Mbaraki Sports Club on Thursday.

The coastal side made home advantage count, building a two-goal lead before Sharks pulled one back late in the contest to keep the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Nairobi on October 6.

The playoff was staged after a lengthy dispute over the regulations governing promotion and relegation. Under the 2025 FKF rules, the bottom three clubs in the Premier League were due to be automatically relegated, a situation that would have sent 16th-placed Kariobangi Sharks directly to the second tier.

Sharks challenged the application and timing of those regulations, arguing that the 2019 statutes should instead be used. Those rules provided for the team finishing 16th in the top flight to face the third-placed National Super League side over two legs.

Following mediation, the matter was resolved with Mombasa United and Kariobangi Sharks agreeing to determine their league status on the pitch.

Mombasa United started brightly, with Jamal Oporia forcing Sharks goalkeeper Collins Omondi into action from an early set piece.

Sharks responded through Steve Mbulere, whose deliveries into the penalty area caused problems, although the United defence remained alert to clear the danger.

David Polepole later had one of Sharks' clearest first-half chances after Zeblon Kutera picked him out with a cut-back, but he failed to make the required connection.

At the opposite end, Omondi produced important saves to keep the visitors level, denying Waziri Shentembo in a one-on-one situation before keeping out another dangerous Oporia free kick.

The teams therefore went into half-time without a goal.

Kariobangi Sharks made changes after the break, bringing on Yusuf Hassan, Wayne Otieno and Fidel Otieno as they looked to gain greater control in midfield.

Mombasa United, however, continued to push forward and eventually found the breakthrough shortly after the hour mark.

Peter Abiola was brought down inside the penalty area following a quick counter-attack, handing the hosts a penalty. Dennis Mabeya converted confidently, sending Omondi the wrong way to put United ahead.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute. Mzee Hassan delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area, where Shentembo arrived to finish from close range.

Sharks responded in the 83rd minute through substitute Wayne Otieno, who scored from inside the box to reduce the deficit and hand the Nairobi side an important lifeline.

Mombasa United resisted late pressure to secure the 2-1 victory and will travel to Nairobi with a one-goal advantage for the decisive second leg on Tuesday, October 6.
