Real Madrid produced a stunning late comeback to beat Roma 4-3 in a dramatic Champions League encounter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma appeared to be heading towards a memorable victory after Donyell Malen struck twice in the second half to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage, but Madrid responded with three late goals to turn the match completely around.

Roma made the stronger start and took a deserved lead in the 20th minute.

Matias Soule found Marten de Roon on the edge of the area, and the midfielder's powerful strike took a deflection before beating Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid responded five minutes later through Kylian Mbappe.

The French forward collected possession before driving towards goal and striking from distance, with his effort deflecting off Gianluca Mancini and looping beyond goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

The equaliser was Mbappe's 100th Champions League goal as Madrid recovered from a difficult opening period.

Roma restored their advantage six minutes after the restart.

Rodrigo Mora released Malen through the Madrid defence, and the forward kept his composure to lift the ball beyond Courtois for 2-1.

Malen struck again in the 57th minute after Soule played an excellent pass through the Madrid defence.

The Netherlands international finished clinically past Courtois, with VAR confirming he had remained onside.

At 3-1, Roma looked firmly in control, while Madrid struggled to produce the attacking rhythm needed to rescue the contest.

Jose Mourinho responded by introducing Endrick and Arda Guler, changes that eventually transformed the closing stages.

Madrid found a lifeline in the 82nd minute after a quickly worked corner.

Endrick's header was poorly handled by Gollini, allowing substitute Carlos Espi to react quickest and convert from close range.

Three minutes later, Madrid were level.

Guler delivered a corner from the left and Endrick rose unmarked to power a header beyond Gollini, completing an extraordinary turnaround from 3-1 down to 3-3.

Madrid were not finished.

In the 90th minute, Guler delivered another dangerous corner and Antonio Rudiger got ahead of his marker before turning the ball home from close range.

The goal completed a remarkable seven-minute comeback and left Roma stunned after they had controlled large periods of the second half.

Roma pushed for a response in stoppage time but Madrid protected their advantage to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The result gave Real Madrid two wins from their opening two Champions League matches after their victory over Inter on the opening matchday.

For Roma, the defeat was particularly painful after they had placed themselves in a commanding position through Malen's second-half double.

Madrid, however, once again demonstrated their ability to survive difficult moments in Europe and find a way to win when defeat appeared almost certain.
