Senegal have sacked head coach Pape Thiaw following their early exit from the World Cup, the Senegalese Football Federation announced on Sunday.
Thiaw and his entire coaching staff have been relieved of their duties after the Lions of Teranga were knocked out by Belgium in the Round of 32.
In a statement, the federation said the decision was reached after a meeting of its executive committee.
Following a meeting of the executive committee, it was decided to initiate proceedings to relieve national team coach Pape Thiaw, as well as the entire coaching staff, of their duties,” the federation said.
FSF president Abdoulaye Fall is expected to address the matter in a press conference on Monday, where he will explain the reasons behind the decision and discuss the future of the national team.
Thiaw, a former Senegal international, took charge of the national side in 2024. His time in charge included a major high point in January, when Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations final.
However, that success was later overshadowed after Senegal were stripped of the title as punishment for walking off the pitch during a chaotic final against Morocco.
At the World Cup, Senegal struggled to find consistency. They lost group-stage matches against France and Norway before beating Iraq 5-0 to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Their campaign then ended in painful fashion against Belgium. Senegal had led 2-0 until the 86th minute, only to concede late and eventually lose 3-2 after extra time.
That collapse proved costly for Thiaw, who has now paid the price for a tournament that fell below expectations.
Senegal will now begin the search for a new coach as they look to rebuild after a difficult World Cup campaign.
The federation’s next decision will be important for a squad that still has quality, experience and the ambition to remain among Africa’s strongest national teams.
