Valverde’s Late Strike Seals Dramatic Real Madrid Win

Real Madrid snatched a dramatic late victory over Celta Vigo after Federico Valverde scored in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win in an entertaining LaLiga clash at Estadio Abanca Balaidos on Friday night.

The victory could prove crucial in the Spanish title race as Los Blancos moved to within one point of leaders Barcelona, although having played a game more.

Celta Vigo began the match brightly and created the early opportunities, forcing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into action with a series of saves. Borja Iglesias threatened twice in the opening minutes, but the Belgian shot stopper reacted well to keep the hosts at bay.

Despite Celta’s positive start, Real Madrid struck first in the 11th minute. A well worked short corner routine saw Arda Guler find Aurelien Tchouameni inside the box, and the French midfielder calmly steered his finish into the far corner to give the visitors the lead.

The goal marked Tchouameni’s first LaLiga strike of the season and temporarily silenced the home crowd.

Celta Vigo, however, refused to be rattled and continued to push forward. Their persistence paid off in the 25th minute when Williot Swedberg capitalised on a defensive lapse to set up Borja Iglesias, who finished confidently from close range to bring the hosts level.

The equaliser injected fresh belief into the home side and they continued to threaten before the break. Courtois was once again called upon to make key saves, denying both Iglesias and Swedberg to ensure the sides went into halftime locked at 1-1.

Real Madrid dominated possession in the second half and spent long spells camped inside the Celta half, but struggled to break down a well organised defence.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side created a number of half chances, with Vinicius Junior, Valverde and substitute Cesar Palacios all testing the Celta backline, but the hosts stood firm and looked increasingly likely to secure a valuable point.

Just as the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Real Madrid found a decisive moment in the fourth minute of added time.

Trent Alexander Arnold’s cross was partially cleared by the Celta defence, but the ball fell kindly to Federico Valverde on the edge of the box. The Uruguayan struck a first time effort that took a slight deflection off Marcos Alonso before flying into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations among the visiting players.

The late winner stunned the home crowd and ensured Real Madrid secured a hard fought three points in dramatic fashion.

Celta Vigo will now shift their attention to European action with a Europa League clash against Lyon, while Real Madrid prepare for a huge Champions League encounter against Manchester City next week.

Although not their most convincing performance, the victory could prove decisive for Real Madrid as they continue their pursuit of the LaLiga title.
