Odegaard Fires Arsenal Past Chelsea to Maintain Perfect Start

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea a stunning early lead before Kai Havertz equalised midway through the first half. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard then completed the turnaround five minutes after the restart with the goal that ultimately separated the sides.

Chelsea needed just 77 seconds to silence the home crowd.

After Ezri Konsa conceded a free-kick, Chelsea sent the ball into the Arsenal penalty area. Declan Rice's clearance reached Jorrel Hato, who headed it towards Rogers on the edge of the box.

However, VAR ruled the goal out after determining that Konsa had been offside before Calafiori swept in the rebound.

Mikel Arteta's side continued pressing and eventually found a legitimate equaliser in the 25th minute.

Rice fed Havertz on the right, and the German forward drove inside before firing a low left-footed effort towards the near post.

Emiliano Martinez managed to get a hand to the shot but could not keep it out, bringing Arsenal level at 1-1.

The match remained open, with both sides creating opportunities in a high-tempo first half.

Rogers had another chance after Joao Pedro carried the ball into the Arsenal area, but his effort failed to find the target.

At the opposite end, Arsenal continued to threaten through Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Havertz.

Chelsea then came within inches of restoring their lead in stoppage time.

Joao Pedro released Pedro Neto on a rapid counter-attack, and the Portugal international cut inside before curling a low effort beyond David Raya.

The shot beat the Arsenal goalkeeper but struck the base of the post, leaving the teams level at half-time.

Tzolis moved infield from the right and played a clever pass towards Havertz.

Instead of taking possession, the Arsenal striker produced an intelligent dummy that allowed the ball to run through to Odegaard.

The Norwegian captain took full advantage, firing a fine left-footed finish past Martinez from inside the penalty area to make it 2-1.

Arsenal continued applying pressure after taking the lead and came close to extending their advantage.

Havertz helped Odegaard's pass into Saka's path in the 69th minute, but Martinez reacted well to push the winger's curling effort behind.

Havertz then threatened from a corner moments later, with Reece James managing to prevent his header from reaching the target.

Chelsea enjoyed longer spells of possession as the game entered its closing stages, but Arsenal's defence remained organised.

Palmer found space inside the area in the 63rd minute, only to send his effort directly at Raya.

Arteta later introduced Martin Zubimendi, Piero Hincapie, Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyokeres as Arsenal attempted to protect their advantage while retaining a threat on the counter-attack.

Chelsea manager Alonso responded with his own changes, including Estevao, who almost produced a late equaliser.

In the 89th minute, the Brazilian winger cut inside onto his left foot and curled an effort towards the top corner.

Raya produced an excellent save to tip the shot over and preserve Arsenal's lead.

Chelsea were unable to create another clear opportunity during the remaining stoppage time, and the final whistle confirmed Arsenal's 2-1 victory.

The result extends Arsenal's unbeaten Premier League run against Chelsea to 10 matches after the Gunners entered the fixture having already gone nine league meetings without defeat against their London rivals.

More importantly for Arteta, the defending champions have now won each of their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Arsenal and Manchester City are the only teams to retain 100 percent records after three rounds, with City ahead on goals scored at this early stage of the campaign.

Chelsea suffer their first league defeat under Alonso after beginning the season with consecutive victories.

Although the visitors enjoyed significant spells of possession and registered 13 attempts, they generated just 0.35 expected goals, underlining how effectively Arsenal restricted their most dangerous opportunities.

For Arsenal, the victory represents another early statement in their title defence.

They fell behind almost immediately against one of the sides expected to challenge near the top of the table, recovered without losing control and ultimately found the quality required to turn the contest around.
