Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their winless start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, October 19.

James Maddison opened the scoring with a spectacular first-half strike before Jack Rudoni equalised shortly after the restart, but Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham's advantage with another superb finish.

Ben Davies added a third goal deep into stoppage time to seal a much-needed victory for Roberto De Zerbi's side, lifting Spurs off the bottom of the Premier League standings.

The result moved Tottenham into 16th place with six points from seven matches, level with Coventry but ahead on goal difference.

Spurs entered the encounter as the only team yet to register a Premier League victory this season, having shown signs of improvement in their previous 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

De Zerbi made five changes to his starting lineup, bringing Maddison and Marmoush into the side alongside Andrew Robertson, Micky van de Ven and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Maddison was making his first Premier League start since May 2025, while Marmoush was handed an opportunity to make an impact against the promoted visitors.

Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, arrived in North London following consecutive league victories over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The visitors began brightly and threatened in the seventh minute when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto delivered a dangerous cross that nearly caused an own goal, forcing Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into an important intervention.

Sakamoto threatened again shortly afterwards, seeing his effort deflected behind after combining with Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Tottenham gradually established control and broke the deadlock in the 14th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Maddison.

Mohammed Kudus advanced down the right flank, beat his marker and played the ball inside to the attacking midfielder, who unleashed a powerful right-footed effort from outside the penalty area.

The shot curled beyond Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and into the far corner, giving Tottenham a 1-0 lead and sparking celebrations around the stadium.

It was Maddison's first goal for Tottenham since February 2025, marking a memorable return to the scoresheet after a lengthy spell disrupted by injury.

Spurs thought they had doubled their advantage moments later when Dominic Solanke converted from close range following a delivery from Robertson, but the move had already been stopped for offside.

The hosts continued to dominate possession, with Maddison and Kudus combining effectively to create problems for Coventry's defensive line.

Maddison threatened again in the 29th minute, curling an effort narrowly wide after a Tottenham corner was cleared into his path.

Coventry remained dangerous on the counterattack, however, with Sidiki Cherif using his pace and physical presence to trouble the Tottenham defence.

Solanke also went close in the 39th minute after receiving a pass from Sandro Tonali, but his effort was deflected wide.

Tottenham headed into the interval with a 1-0 advantage, having produced one of their more encouraging attacking displays of the campaign.

The visitors returned for the second half with renewed determination and needed just four minutes to restore parity.

Rudoni capitalised on a series of loose balls and defensive challenges inside the Tottenham penalty area before forcing a right-footed finish past Kinsky in the 49th minute.

Thomas-Asante provided the final touch that set up Rudoni, whose persistence brought Coventry level and increased the pressure on the hosts.

Tottenham responded by pushing forward in search of another breakthrough, with Tonali sending an effort over the crossbar as the home supporters urged their team on.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 58th minute when Marmoush produced an outstanding individual goal to restore the lead.

Robertson played the ball into the Egyptian attacker on the left side of the penalty area, where Marmoush turned away from his marker before curling a powerful right-footed effort into the far corner.

The finish gave Tottenham a 2-1 advantage and marked Marmoush's first goal for the club following his move from Manchester City.

Coventry responded by introducing Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka as Lampard attempted to find another equaliser.

The visitors continued to create problems for Tottenham's defence, with Rudoni and Thomas-Asante involved in several threatening attacks.

De Zerbi was forced into a defensive change when Robertson picked up an injury, with Davies replacing the Scotland international in the 69th minute.

Conor Gallagher was also introduced for Maddison as Tottenham sought greater stability in midfield.

Coventry increasingly controlled possession during the closing stages, forcing the hosts to defend deeper as they protected their narrow advantage.

Tottenham goalkeeper Kinsky and his defenders were kept busy as the visitors searched for a way through, but Spurs managed to withstand the pressure.

There was another significant moment in the 87th minute when Dejan Kulusevski returned to competitive action after 526 days away from the Tottenham side.

The Swedish international replaced Kudus to a warm reception from the home supporters, providing another encouraging development for De Zerbi.

Mathys Tel was also introduced in place of Marmoush, with the French forward going close to scoring in stoppage time when his curling effort drifted narrowly wide.

With eight minutes of added time announced, Tottenham supporters faced an anxious finish as Coventry continued pushing forward.

However, Davies settled the contest in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

After Coventry failed to clear their penalty area, Solanke helped the ball into the defender's path, and Davies struck a speculative left-footed effort from outside the box.

The shot slipped beneath Rushworth's glove and into the net, completing a 3-1 victory for the hosts.

The result brought relief for Tottenham, who had struggled to convert promising attacking performances into victories during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Despite recording only a slightly higher expected goals figure than Coventry, with 0.87 compared to the visitors' 0.82, Spurs demonstrated greater efficiency in front of goal.

For De Zerbi, the victory offered encouragement as key attacking players returned to form and fitness.

Maddison's influential performance, Marmoush's first goal and Kulusevski's long-awaited return provided additional positives beyond the three points.

Coventry, meanwhile, suffered a setback after their recent victories, dropping to 17th place despite another competitive display under Lampard.

Tottenham will now look to build on their first league triumph as they attempt to climb further away from the relegation places and revive their Premier League campaign.
