Noni Madueke came off the bench to score a decisive late winner as Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in their Premier League encounter at the City Ground on Sunday, October 18.

The England international struck in the 80th minute after receiving a pass from Declan Rice, with his deflected effort beating goalkeeper Matz Sels to hand Mikel Arteta's side all three points.

The victory lifted Arsenal above Brighton into second place in the Premier League standings, while Nottingham Forest remained in the relegation zone following another frustrating afternoon in front of their supporters.

Arsenal dominated possession throughout much of the opening half but struggled to break down a disciplined Forest defence organised by head coach Oliver Glasner.

The visitors controlled the early exchanges, with Bukayo Saka providing much of their attacking threat down the right flank, although clear goalscoring opportunities were limited.

Forest remained compact and looked to frustrate Arsenal before attempting to exploit spaces on the counterattack.

The hosts threatened in the 19th minute when Liam Delap kept a deflected Daniel Munoz cross in play and set up Dan Ndoye, whose low effort was heading towards the corner before Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya intervened.

Arsenal responded with sustained pressure, winning a series of corners as they searched for an opening against the home side's defensive structure.

Gabriel Magalhaes nearly created a breakthrough in the 26th minute when his clever backheel inside the six-yard box was cleared before it could cause further damage.

Kai Havertz then wasted a promising opportunity in the 37th minute after meeting Rice's curling free-kick, sending his header over the crossbar from close range.

The German forward had another chance shortly before the interval after being released into the penalty area by Rice, but he could not produce a decisive finish from a difficult angle.

Neither team managed a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, leaving the contest goalless at half-time.

Arteta responded by introducing Madueke in place of Eberechi Eze at the beginning of the second half, hoping the winger's pace and direct running would provide a different attacking dimension.

Forest returned with greater confidence and began committing more players forward, making the contest increasingly competitive.

James McAtee had an opportunity from a free-kick shortly after the restart but sent his effort over the crossbar.

The hosts continued pushing forward, with Delap causing problems for Arsenal's central defenders through his physical presence and movement.

Murillo also threatened from a corner in the 54th minute, although his header was comfortably gathered by Raya.

Arsenal gradually regained control but continued struggling to create clear chances against the determined hosts.

Gabriel missed a promising opportunity in the 67th minute when he rose to meet Rice's corner, directing his header over the crossbar from close range.

Arteta had already introduced Viktor Gyokeres, Mikel Merino and Jurrien Timber as he looked to increase the attacking intensity.

The changes helped Arsenal establish a stronger presence in the final third.

Rice should have broken the deadlock in the 72nd minute following an excellent attacking move involving Martin Odegaard and Timber.

The defender delivered a precise cutback into the midfielder's path, but Rice sent his first-time effort over the bar from a promising position.

With the contest heading towards another goalless draw between the sides at the City Ground, Madueke finally delivered the breakthrough.

Rice switched play towards the left flank in the 80th minute, finding Madueke in space.

The substitute moved past a tiring Munoz before unleashing a powerful right-footed effort that took a deflection off a defender and flew beyond Sels into the net.

The goal ended Arsenal's frustration and put the visitors in control with just 10 minutes of regulation time remaining.

Forest manager Glasner responded by introducing Chris Wood and Callum Hudson-Odoi as the hosts searched for a late equaliser.

The home side almost produced a dramatic response in stoppage time when Murillo surged forward, weaving past several Arsenal players before sending a powerful effort narrowly over the crossbar.

Delap also threatened moments later, but Ezri Konsa recovered brilliantly to block his attempt before the striker could seriously test Raya.

Arsenal held firm during the closing stages to preserve their narrow advantage and secure another important victory.

Despite controlling much of the possession, the Gunners finished with just one shot on target, which proved sufficient to claim maximum points.

The visitors recorded an expected goals figure of 1.07 compared to Forest's 0.75, highlighting the limited clear-cut opportunities throughout the encounter.

For Arsenal, the result continued their impressive run of narrow victories, with Arteta's side once again demonstrating their ability to grind out results without producing their most convincing attacking performance.

Forest, meanwhile, remain without a Premier League home goal this season, increasing the pressure on Glasner as his team struggles to turn competitive performances into points.

Arsenal will now turn their attention to a Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich, while Forest face Ipswich Town on Friday as they seek to end their losing run.
