United March On as Mbeumo and Fernandes Sink 10-Man Spurs
- Manchester United made it four Premier League wins on the bounce with a controlled 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, as Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes struck either side of half-time in a match defined by Cristian Romero’s red card.
Manchester United’s revival under Michael Carrick gathered even more pace on Saturday afternoon as the Red Devils comfortably dispatched a depleted Tottenham Hotspur side 2-0 at Old Trafford.
The hosts started on the front foot and nearly struck inside the opening minute, only for Mbeumo to fire wide after being teed up by Fernandes. That early warning proved decisive, as United dominated territory and chances throughout the opening half.
The turning point arrived in the 29th minute when Tottenham captain Cristian Romero once again let his side down. The Argentine defender lunged recklessly into Casemiro, catching the Brazilian high on the leg. Referee Michael Oliver had little hesitation in producing a straight red card, leaving Spurs with a mountain to climb.
United quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage. From a cleverly worked short corner in the 38th minute, Kobbie Mainoo pulled the ball back for Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly guided a left-footed finish into the bottom corner to give the home side a deserved lead.
From there, it was largely one-way traffic. United controlled possession, pressed aggressively and repeatedly tested Guglielmo Vicario, who kept the scoreline respectable with a string of saves. Tottenham, by contrast, struggled to muster any attacking threat and managed just a single shot on target all afternoon.
After the break, the pattern remained the same. Fernandes dictated play with authority, while Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha stretched the Spurs defence. United’s persistence was finally rewarded in the 81st minute. Diogo Dalot’s high delivery from the right caused chaos in the box, and Fernandes reacted quickest, guiding a composed finish into the bottom-right corner to seal the points.
The goal capped another outstanding display from United’s captain, who continues to carry the team creatively and now boasts direct involvement in 200 goals for the club across all competitions.
In truth, the margin could have been greater. United registered 23 shots and an expected goals tally of 1.79, underlining their dominance, while Spurs produced little response despite late attacking substitutions.
The win lifts United firmly into fourth place and marks their first run of four consecutive league victories since early 2024. For Tottenham, the problems continue to mount. Now winless in seven Premier League matches, they could slip dangerously close to the relegation places if results elsewhere go against them.
United will look to extend their fine form away at West Ham next, while Spurs return home desperate for a response when they face Newcastle United.
