Michael Carrick Set For Long-Term Manchester United Stay

Manchester United are set to hand Michael Carrick a new two-year contract after his impressive turnaround at Old Trafford secured Champions League qualification and revived the club’s fortunes.

Michael Carrick is set to continue as permanent head coach of Manchester United after agreeing a new two-year deal that could keep him at Old Trafford until 2029.

The agreement also contains an additional option year, with the final legal details currently being completed ahead of an official announcement expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Carrick has emerged as the preferred choice of Manchester United’s hierarchy following an impressive spell in charge that transformed the club’s season and secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

United director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada are understood to believe Carrick is the right man to lead the club forward after a remarkable run of results since taking charge.

In just 15 matches as head coach, Carrick has recorded 10 victories and three draws, guiding United to crucial wins over rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

His impact has not only revived Manchester United’s hopes on the pitch but also guaranteed Champions League football, a development expected to deliver a financial boost worth around KSh 13 billion (£100 million) to the club.

The former United midfielder had been considered the frontrunner for the position for several weeks, with club officials impressed by his relationship with the players, his calm handling of the media and his understanding of Manchester United’s identity and culture.

Carrick’s leadership has also received strong backing from the dressing room, with several senior players publicly supporting his appointment.

Amad Diallo recently admitted that the squad would be delighted to see Carrick remain in charge permanently, praising the coach’s communication skills and ability to unite the team.

The winger explained that Carrick had helped create a stronger bond within the squad, insisting the players now fight for each other regardless of mistakes made during matches.

Experienced midfielder Casemiro has also backed Carrick for the role, while new signing Matheus Cunha is among those impressed by the positive atmosphere built around the club in recent months.

Carrick himself hinted on Friday that clarity over his future was approaching quickly.

Speaking ahead of United’s final home match of the season against Nottingham Forest, the coach admitted discussions over his long-term future were nearing completion.

The 44-year-old is also expected to address supporters after the Nottingham Forest game, continuing the long-standing Manchester United tradition where the head coach speaks to fans following the final home fixture of the campaign.

Former United captain Gary Neville believes Carrick has earned the opportunity after stabilising the club during a difficult period.

Neville praised Carrick’s ability to reconnect the dressing room and supporters while warning that next season’s Champions League campaign would present an even greater challenge.

Manchester United had reportedly considered several elite managerial candidates including Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.

However, Carrick’s results, popularity within the squad and growing stability at Old Trafford ultimately convinced the club to continue with the former midfielder.

The decision signals a major vote of confidence in Carrick as Manchester United look to rebuild and challenge consistently at the highest level once again.
