Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has revealed that a decision regarding his long-term future at Old Trafford is expected “pretty soon” amid growing reports he is on the verge of being handed the job permanently.
Carrick stepped into the role in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim and has since overseen a major turnaround in fortunes for the Premier League giants.
The former England midfielder has guided United into third place in the league standings and secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League ahead of their final fixtures of the campaign.
Reports in England suggest United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox are prepared to recommend Carrick for the permanent role to co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.
Negotiations over a two-year contract, with an option for an additional season, are also believed to be progressing well and could be finalised before the end of the week.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest, Carrick admitted discussions over his future are nearing a conclusion.
“Listen, the future for me is going to be decided pretty soon,” Carrick told reporters.
“We always knew the situation would become clearer towards the end of the season. Nothing has really changed from that point of view.”
Carrick’s impressive spell at Old Trafford has restored optimism among supporters after a difficult period under Amorim, whose tenure was marked by inconsistency and poor performances.
After leaving Middlesbrough in 2025 following failure to secure promotion to the Premier League, few expected Carrick to make such an immediate impact at Manchester United.
Instead, the 44-year-old has quickly earned praise for bringing stability, improving performances and reconnecting the squad with supporters.
Carrick also carries legendary status at the club following a successful playing career that lasted 12 years at Old Trafford. During that period, he won multiple major honours including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.
“It’s a special football club and I’m proud to be part of it again,” Carrick said.
“As someone who cares deeply about the club, helping move Manchester United forward has meant a lot to me.”
Manchester United have not lifted the Premier League trophy since the retirement of legendary manager Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Several high-profile managers including Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal have failed to restore the club to the top of English football during the past decade.
Carrick, however, believes the club is finally moving in the right direction again.
“You always have to keep aiming higher,” he said.
“We want to continue improving, continue progressing and keep moving in a positive direction. That is the challenge for everyone at this football club.”
