Paris Saint-Germain overcame Aston Villa 2-1 in an entertaining final on Wednesday night in the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg to keep the UEFA Super Cup.
The European champions went ahead as soon as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored, followed by Brian Madjo (17) a few minutes before half-time putting Villa level.
In the second half, Desire Doue reverted the situation in favor of PSG and scored after a VAR challenge for offside to give his team the first trophy of their 2026-27 season.
PSG came into the game as champions of the Champions League and their attacking display was maintained in the 20th minute when Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock.
The Georgian striker picked up the ball on the left and flew in and scored a big finish which Aston Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot could not handle.
It was an impressive performance from Villa, who produced a number of opportunities with Madjo, who was making his professional debut on one of European football's biggest stages.
He was within a few yards of the ball a couple of times before making his fortune on the break of the half-time.
In the inching challenge from Willian Pacho, Madjo held firm to make it 1-1, to become the youngest player to score in UEFA Super Cup history.
The match was level at the time of the break and the European champions had a new sense of confidence when his equaliser came in.
Villa lacked a number of key rotation players, such as Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez, who all came off the bench for the World Cup with long layoffs.
The voids opened up ways for younger players with Madjo and 19-year-old George Hemmings both delivering promising performances with top teams.
PSG got the points back in the 61st minute.
He ended up behind Aston Villa defence as Doue went on for the finishing touch, but was momentarily lost when VAR looked up an offside call.
The objective was eventually achieved, making the French champions 2-1 ahead.
Villa was not prepared to pass over the baton, and almost hit the first reply.
Hemmings was in a good position to score soon after the goal but goalkeeper Matvey Safonov dived to his right for the ball, making a good save to preserve PSG's lead.
Emery's side kept looking for an equaliser in the final moments, but PSG tried to take control of the contest and hold onto their slender lead by playing a possession-based game.
Villa advanced at the end and Emi Buendia had one fancy chance from a distance in stoppage time but his shot went astray.
PSG fought back to win yet another European title and a defense of the UEFA Super Cup.
It would follow a clear superlative trend for Luis Enrique in his career, and would demonstrate that PSG were still aiming to be the continent's leading side.
Aston Villa had been left with their tails between their legs but had grounds for consolation with a competitive display against the reigning European champions.
Madjo was also a notable specimen and the youngster looked fearless and calm on his maiden appearance for one of the continent's top teams.
PSG's win was a perfect opening for the new season with captain Marquinhos lifting the Super Cup in Salzburg.
