PSG Clinch Fifth Straight Ligue 1 Title With Lens Victory

Paris Saint-Germain secured a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 crown after defeating nearest challengers Lens 2-0 on Wednesday night, extending their dominance in French football under Luis Enrique.

Paris Saint-Germain sealed another French Ligue 1 title with a composed 2-0 victory away to Lens as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ibrahim Mbaye scored in a decisive encounter at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The win confirmed PSG as champions with one game remaining after Luis Enrique’s side opened up an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of the standings.

PSG had effectively moved to the brink of the title following last weekend’s narrow 1-0 win against Brest, which left them six points clear while also holding a vastly superior goal difference advantage over Lens.

Even so, the Paris giants ensured there would be no late drama by producing another efficient display away from home despite several notable absentees from the starting line-up.

The visitors were without key stars including Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Warren Zaire-Emery, but their squad depth once again proved too strong.

PSG broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark after Ousmane Dembele capitalised on a poor clearance from Malang Sarr. The newly crowned Ligue 1 Player of the Year quickly released Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who controlled brilliantly before calmly finishing for his 19th goal of the season.

Lens attempted to fight their way back into the contest during the second half and came close when Abdallah Sima struck the post in the 74th minute. Florian Thauvin also thought he had equalised late on, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

With the hosts pushing forward in search of a breakthrough, PSG struck again in stoppage time through Senegal international Ibrahim Mbaye. The substitute wrapped up the victory and officially confirmed another league triumph for the French champions.

The latest success means PSG have now won a record 14 Ligue 1 titles overall, with 12 of those coming during the last 14 years under Qatari ownership.

Luis Enrique’s side have already enjoyed a remarkable campaign, having previously lifted the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Intercontinental Cup and French Champions Trophy earlier this season.

There could still be more silverware to come for the Parisians. PSG will face Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest on May 30 as they chase back-to-back European crowns.

Should they defeat Arsenal, PSG would become only the second team in the modern era to successfully defend the European Cup title.

Despite the defeat, Lens also had reason to celebrate after officially securing second place in Ligue 1. The result guarantees them direct qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League league phase as they prepare for a return to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since the 2023/24 campaign.

Lens will now shift their attention to the upcoming French Cup final against Nice on May 22.
