Manchester City delivered a professional performance to defeat Crystal Palace 3-0 and maintain pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal in a tense title race run-in.
Pep Guardiola made six changes to his starting line-up with one eye on the upcoming FA Cup final, but City still proved too strong for a Palace side that struggled to threaten throughout the contest at the Etihad Stadium.
The visitors thought they had made a dream start inside the opening minutes when Jean-Philippe Mateta found the net after Brennan Johnson’s low cross, but the offside flag denied Crystal Palace an early breakthrough.
City dominated possession but initially found it difficult to break down Oliver Glasner’s disciplined defensive setup. Crystal Palace even created a couple of decent opportunities midway through the first half, with Yeremy Pino seeing an effort deflected wide before Chris Richards somehow headed over from close range.
After a sluggish opening half hour, Guardiola’s side finally found their breakthrough in the 32nd minute through Antoine Semenyo. Phil Foden produced a brilliant backheel pass between two Palace defenders, allowing Semenyo to fire a first-time finish beyond Dean Henderson for his sixth league goal of the season.
The goal transformed City’s rhythm and confidence. Just eight minutes later, Omar Marmoush doubled the advantage after another decisive contribution from Foden. The England international cleverly guided the ball into Marmoush’s path and the forward calmly slotted home with the aid of a slight deflection.
Foden was at the heart of everything positive for City and nearly collected a third assist before halftime, but Henderson produced an outstanding save to deny Josko Gvardiol’s powerful header.
Crystal Palace struggled to respond after the break as City controlled the tempo without needing to shift into top gear. Guardiola’s men remained composed in possession while limiting the visitors to very few clear-cut opportunities.
The hosts continued to push for a third goal, knowing goal difference could become crucial in the title race against Arsenal. Their persistence paid off in the 84th minute when substitute Rayan Cherki carried the ball forward before threading a perfectly weighted pass into Savinho’s path.
The Brazilian winger kept his composure and curled a fine finish past Henderson to end a lengthy Premier League scoring drought and seal all three points for City.
Guardiola’s side finished the match with superior attacking numbers and looked comfortable throughout the second half as Palace managed just one shot on target.
The victory moves Manchester City back within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table while also improving their goal difference advantage heading into the final two matches of the campaign.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, remain focused on their upcoming Europa Conference League final after another disappointing domestic performance that leaves them without a win in five league matches.
