Aston Villa booked their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after producing a sensational 4-2 victory over Liverpool in an entertaining Premier League clash at Villa Park on Friday night.
Unai Emery’s side delivered one of their best performances of the season to move above Liverpool into fourth place, while the visitors were left facing a tense final day battle to secure Champions League qualification.
The hosts started brightly and nearly grabbed an early opener through Ollie Watkins, whose effort was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Watkins remained a constant threat throughout the opening half as Villa looked determined to capitalise on Liverpool’s defensive struggles.
Liverpool slowly grew into the contest and thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Cody Gakpo tapped home from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Villa eventually broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute through Morgan Rogers. A cleverly worked short corner involving Lucas Digne and captain John McGinn created space inside the penalty area, and Rogers calmly curled his finish into the far corner to send Villa Park into celebration.
Liverpool responded strongly after the break and found an equaliser seven minutes into the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box and captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to power a header into the net for 1-1.
However, Villa restored their lead almost immediately after a costly mistake from Szoboszlai. The Liverpool midfielder slipped while attempting to control a throw-in, allowing Rogers to break free before squaring for Watkins, who made no mistake from close range to make it 2-1.
The home side continued to dominate and nearly extended their lead when Emiliano Buendia rattled the woodwork with a stunning effort that struck both the crossbar and post.
Villa’s third goal eventually arrived in the 73rd minute after relentless pressure inside the Liverpool penalty area. Mamardashvili initially denied efforts from Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres, but Watkins reacted quickest to score his second goal of the night from close range.
Captain McGinn then produced a moment of brilliance late in the game to put the result beyond doubt. Watkins turned provider this time, finding McGinn on the edge of the area before the Scottish midfielder curled a superb left-footed strike into the top corner for Villa’s fourth goal.
Van Dijk scored a second header in stoppage time from another Szoboszlai set-piece, but it proved to be little more than consolation for Arne Slot’s side after a disappointing defensive display.
The victory confirmed Aston Villa’s return to Europe’s elite competition next season and capped a remarkable campaign under Emery. Villa will now head into their Europa League final with confidence soaring after dismantling one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs in front of their home supporters.
Liverpool, meanwhile, suffered their 12th league defeat of the season and will need a positive result on the final day to avoid missing out on Champions League football.
