Homeboyz Mourn Defender Silas Abungana as Suspect Is Arrested

Kakamega Homeboyz have issued an emotional update following the heartbreaking death of their defender Silas Abungana, who passed away after suffering severe injuries in a violent domestic incident.

The club confirmed that Abungana died shortly before midnight on Wednesday while receiving treatment at Kakamega General Hospital. He had been admitted with serious head injuries after an assault that took place on Tuesday night at his home. Reports indicate that the attack involved a close family member, sending shockwaves through both his family and the football fraternity.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the suspect reportedly fled, prompting an intensive search by law enforcement officers. On Thursday, Kakamega Homeboyz confirmed that a suspect connected to Abungana’s death has since been arrested, a development the club acknowledged with cautious relief amid deep mourning.

While welcoming the swift response from the authorities, the club made it clear that no arrest can ease the pain of losing a teammate, friend and brother in such tragic circumstances. They reiterated their commitment to seeing justice served, while honouring Abungana’s memory and the contribution he made on and off the pitch.

“The perpetrator behind the death of our dear brother Silas Abungana has been apprehended. We appreciate the swift action by the authorities as we continue to mourn and seek justice for Silas. Forever in our hearts, Silas,” the club said in a statement.

Abungana’s passing has been felt even more deeply given how recently he had been in action. Just days before his death, the experienced fullback played the entire match for Homeboyz in their FKF Premier League fixture against Mara Sugar, showing the commitment and professionalism that defined his career.

He joined Kakamega Homeboyz in August 2025 and quickly became an important figure in the squad under head coach Patrick Odhiambo. Known for his discipline, work rate and calm presence at the back, Abungana earned respect both in the dressing room and among the fans.

Before moving to Kakamega, he had built a solid reputation at Shabana FC, where he was part of the team that achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2023. Following his release in January 2024, he joined Gucha Stars and played a key role in their promotion to the National Super League ahead of the 2025-26 season, performances that eventually earned him his move to Homeboyz.

As investigations continue, tributes continue to pour in for a player whose journey was defined by perseverance and quiet leadership. Kenyan football has lost not just a defender, but a life taken far too soon.
