Allan Thigo, one of the most celebrated figures in Kenyan football history, has passed away after battling a long-term illness.
The former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars midfielder died on Saturday evening at his home in Bungoma County, bringing an end to a remarkable football journey that inspired generations of Kenyan players and supporters.
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that Thigo was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital after his condition suddenly worsened.
“He passed away some 30 minutes ago,” his wife Dorcas Simiyu told Nation Sport on Saturday evening.
Widely regarded as one of Kenya’s finest attacking midfielders, Thigo became famous for his incredible stamina, leadership and technical brilliance during the 1970s and 1980s.
His dominance in midfield earned him the legendary nicknames “Midfield General” and “90-Minute Man” because of his tireless performances and the rare occasions he was substituted during matches.
Thigo played a major role in the history of Kenyan football and was part of the historic Harambee Stars squad that qualified for the country’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 1972 in Cameroon.

Although Kenya did not progress beyond the group stage, the national team managed a respectable fifth-place finish in the eight-team competition.
At club level, Thigo built his greatest legacy with Gor Mahia, where he spent 12 memorable seasons between 1970 and 1981.
He helped K’Ogalo win multiple league titles and famously guided the club to an unbeaten league triumph in 1976 while serving as a player-coach.
Thigo also led Gor Mahia to the final of the Africa Cup Winners’ Cup in 1979, where the Kenyan giants narrowly lost to Canon Yaounde of Cameroon.
Apart from his successful spell with Gor Mahia, Thigo also featured for Kisumu Hot Stars during his playing career.
After retiring from professional football, he moved into coaching and later returned for another stint as Gor Mahia head coach in 2008.
Following news of his death, Gor Mahia paid an emotional tribute to the club legend and praised his enormous contribution to Kenyan football.
The club described Thigo as a dedicated servant whose passion and commitment helped shape the identity and success of Gor Mahia over many years.
Supporters, former players and football officials across the country have continued to send messages of condolence as Kenyan football mourns one of its greatest-ever midfielders.
