APS Bomet walked away with a KSh1.85 million reward after securing a crucial 2-0 victory over Mathare United in an FKF Premier League match played at Kasarani Annex on Sunday.
The financial reward was part of a promise made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who pledged KSh50,000 to every player and official in the matchday squad if the team won their final five matches of the season.
The initiative is aimed at motivating APS Bomet as they battle to retain their top-flight status in the FKF Premier League.
The club had already received a major boost after their previous 1-0 victory over KCB FC, with the latest win further strengthening their survival hopes.
APS Bomet started the match brightly and deservedly took the lead in the 28th minute through Philip Wasai.
The move began with an excellent pass from experienced midfielder Francis Omondi, who floated the ball behind the Mathare United defence before Wasai calmly slotted past goalkeeper Kevin Ouru.
The hosts continued to threaten and nearly doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Philemon Nyakwaka found himself in a promising position, but his effort was blocked by Brian Ochieng.
Trailing at halftime, Mathare United made an attacking change before the second half, introducing Michael Oduor in place of Benson Shikutwa in search of an equaliser.
However, APS Bomet remained the more dangerous side after the restart and almost extended their advantage in the 48th minute.
Nyakwaka broke through on goal once again but delayed his shot for too long, allowing Mathare defenders to recover and clear the danger.
Mathare United created their best opportunity of the second half in the 57th minute from a corner kick delivered by Michael Oduor.
Bilal Atano rose highest inside the box but headed narrowly over the crossbar as the Slum Boys pushed for a way back into the contest.
The game was eventually sealed in the 75th minute when substitute Festus Kipkemoi produced a brilliant finish to double APS Bomet’s lead and spark celebrations among the home supporters.
The victory was witnessed by Deputy Inspector General of Police and club deputy patron Gilbert Masengeli, who attended the match at Kasarani Annex.
APS Bomet’s latest victory could prove decisive in their fight against relegation as the FKF Premier League season approaches its final stages.
