Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has officially declined Mara Sugar FC’s request to host their upcoming FKF Premier League match against Gor Mahia at Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea.
In a letter dated 21 May 2026, the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee stated that the proposed venue did not meet the federation’s regulations governing registered home and alternative grounds.
According to the letter addressed to Mara Sugar CEO Ms. Omalla, FKF noted that Wang’uru Stadium had neither been registered as the club’s alternative venue nor its second alternative venue for the 2025/2026 season.
The federation further explained that the stadium is located more than 200 kilometres away from the club’s primary home ground, making the request inconsistent with Rule 18 of the FKF Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football.
The regulations require clubs to register a primary home venue together with alternative grounds located within the same zone where practical.
FKF documents reportedly show that Mara Sugar registered the following venues for the current campaign:
- Green Stadium, Awendo – Primary Home Venue
- Raila Odinga Stadium, Homabay – Alternative Home Venue
- Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo – Second Alternative Venue
Following the committee’s decision, FKF confirmed that the highly anticipated league fixture will now proceed at Raila Odinga Stadium.
The federation announced the match details as follows:
Mara Sugar FC vs Gor Mahia FC
Date: Sunday, 24 May 2026
Venue: Raila Odinga Stadium, Homabay
Kick-off: 2:00pm
FKF said the decision was made in the interest of protecting the integrity of the competition and ensuring compliance with league rules and regulations.
The fixture is expected to attract huge attention as Gor Mahia continue battling for league honours while Mara Sugar seek a strong finish to their campaign.
