Tottenham Hotspur have made a bold and desperate move in their fight for survival, appointing Roberto De Zerbi as their third manager of the season as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The North London club sit just one point above the drop zone with only seven matches remaining, raising the very real prospect of their first relegation from England’s top flight in nearly five decades.

De Zerbi arrives on a reported five-year deal, underlining the club’s long-term belief in his philosophy, even as they face immediate short-term danger. Spurs are said to have accelerated the appointment to secure his services now rather than risk losing him depending on their divisional status next season.

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world,” De Zerbi said in a club statement.
“I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it.

“Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season.”

De Zerbi replaces Igor Tudor, whose brief interim stint lasted just seven matches following Tottenham’s exit from the Champions League and continued slide toward relegation danger.

The Italian tactician built his reputation in England during an impressive spell with Brighton & Hove Albion between 2022 and 2024, where his progressive, possession-based football earned widespread praise.

He later moved to Olympique de Marseille, guiding the French side to a second-place finish behind Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 and securing Champions League qualification. However, his tenure ended in February following a disappointing European campaign and a heavy 5-0 defeat to PSG.

Tottenham’s current predicament marks a dramatic fall for a club that, just a few years ago, were regulars in the Champions League under Mauricio Pochettino, even reaching the final in 2019.

Despite boasting one of the most modern stadiums in Europe and revenues placing them among the world’s richest clubs, Spurs now face the very real threat of dropping into the Championship for the first time since the 1977/78 season.

The instability has been stark. Ange Postecoglou was dismissed despite delivering Europa League success after a 17th-place league finish. His successor, Thomas Frank, lasted only briefly before being sacked following a dismal run of two wins in 17 matches, paving the way for Tudor’s short-lived spell.

Now, the responsibility falls on De Zerbi to halt the slide and restore belief within a struggling squad.

His first test will come away to Sunderland on April 12 a fixture that could prove pivotal in determining whether Tottenham preserve their Premier League status or suffer one of the most shocking relegations in modern English football.
