The DR Congo national football team have sealed a historic return to the FIFA World Cup after defeating the Jamaica national football team 1-0 in an intercontinental playoff decided in extra time.

It marks a landmark moment for the Central African nation, who will now feature at the global showpiece for the first time in 52 years, having last appeared in 1974 under the name Zaire.

The decisive moment came in the 100th minute when Axel Tuanzebe bundled home from close range following an in-swinging corner, breaking Jamaica’s resistance in a tense and physically demanding encounter played in hot conditions near Guadalajara.

The result caps off a remarkable qualification journey for the Leopards, who eliminated continental heavyweights Nigeria and Cameroon en route to Tuesday’s decisive playoff in Mexico.

Despite dominating possession for large spells, DR Congo were repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined Jamaican defence led by goalkeeper Andre Blake.

The Congolese started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead when Cedric Bakambu found the net inside five minutes, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Bakambu remained a constant threat, later testing Blake with a looping header and a curling effort from distance.

Meschack Elia also came close, firing into the side netting and forcing a sharp save at the near post as DR Congo pushed for a breakthrough.

Jamaica, meanwhile, offered little going forward, with their only notable chance falling to Kasey Palmer, whose deflected effort drifted wide in the first half.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with DR Congo controlling proceedings but struggling to convert chances. Bakambu had another goal disallowed late on, while substitute Edo Kayembe narrowly missed the target from long range as the match edged towards extra time.

The breakthrough finally arrived when Tuanzebe rose in the six-yard box to convert from a corner, sending the Congolese bench and supporters into wild celebrations.

The victory secures DR Congo’s place in Group K, where they will face Portugal national football team, Colombia national football team, and Uzbekistan national football team.

For DR Congo, the qualification represents more than just a return to the World Cup — it is a statement of resurgence on the global stage and a reminder of the nation’s rich footballing heritage.

Their last appearance in 1974 ended in a group-stage exit against Scotland, Yugoslavia, and Brazil, but this new generation now has the opportunity to rewrite history.
