DR Congo Knock Out Nigeria on Penalties After 1–1 Draw in Dramatic Clash

DR Congo Eliminate Nigeria After Dramatic Penalty Shootout in Abuja

Nigeria crashed out of World Cup qualifying in agonising fashion after falling 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo following a tense 1–1 draw that stretched through 120 minutes in Abuja.

The Super Eagles started brightly and took the lead inside three minutes through Frank Onyeka, but failed to build on the early momentum. DR Congo fought back, equalising in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, and neither side could find a winner in regular or extra time.

The match ultimately descended into a nerve-shredding shootout — one Nigeria will look back on with deep regret.

Blistering Start, But DR Congo Hit Back

Nigeria struck almost immediately when Onyeka pounced inside the box, drilling home a right-footed strike to lift the home crowd.

But DR Congo grew into the game, pressing higher and taking advantage of Nigeria’s sloppy midfield turnovers. Their persistence paid off in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia produced a composed left-footed finish to level the contest.

From that point, the match became a cagey tactical battle. Nigeria struggled to break through Congo’s compact block, while the visitors threatened on the counter.

Extra Time Stalemate

Both sides pushed in extra time, but the chances remained few. Fatigue set in, and Nigeria’s decision-making in advanced areas became increasingly rushed. DR Congo, organised and disciplined under pressure, refused to give away cheap chances.

With neither team able to find a breakthrough, penalties were required.

Penalty Shootout Drama

The shootout began with instant drama as Calvin Bassey fired his effort over the bar. Congo’s Samuel Moutoussamy then saw his shot saved, keeping things level.

Nigeria’s fortunes dipped again when Moses Simon was denied, but Akor Adams and Bruno Onyemaechi converted to keep the Super Eagles alive.

Congo responded through Noah Sadiki and Fiston Mayele, while Axel Tuanzebe had his attempt saved, giving Nigeria a glimmer of hope.

The tension rose with Chidera Ejuke smashing a clean finish into the top centre, but Michel-Ange Balikwisha calmly equalised.

Nigeria’s fate was sealed when Semi Ajayi saw his penalty saved, allowing captain Chancel Mbemba to step up and slot home the decisive kick sending DR Congo through 4–3.

Nigeria Out, DR Congo March On

The defeat leaves Nigerian fans devastated. Despite taking an early lead, the Super Eagles failed to control the match or convert their chances.

DR Congo, meanwhile, showed resilience, calmness, and composure throughout the shootout, earning their place in the next round.

Nigeria’s elimination marks another low point in a turbulent period for the national team — and will surely trigger major questions ahead of the next international window.
