Late Drama at Craven Cottage as Fulham Stun Liverpool While Sunderland Hold Spurs
- Premier League Round 20 delivered stoppage-time chaos and hard-fought draws, as Fulham denied Liverpool at the death in a 2-2 thriller, while Sunderland showed resilience to claim a deserved point away to Tottenham.
Premier League fans were treated to a dramatic Sunday evening as Fulham and Liverpool played out an unforgettable 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, before Sunderland frustrated Tottenham Hotspur with a battling 1-1 result in North London.
At Craven Cottage, the contest between Fulham and Liverpool was slow-burning for long spells, but exploded into life when it mattered most. The hosts struck first in the 17th minute through former Red Harry Wilson, who raced clear to finish clinically past Alisson after initially being flagged offside, only for VAR to intervene and award the goal.
Fulham sat deep and executed their game plan with discipline, frustrating Liverpool for much of the first half. The visitors dominated possession but struggled to create clear openings, heading into the break a goal down and short of attacking inspiration.
Liverpool finally found their breakthrough just before the hour mark when Florian Wirtz swept home from inside the box. Once again the assistant’s flag was raised, but VAR overturned the decision, confirming that Issa Diop had played the German onside.
The game appeared to be drifting towards a draw until a remarkable stoppage-time finale unfolded. Deep into added time, Cody Gakpo arrived at the back post to turn home a cross and seemingly snatch victory for the champions. Liverpool celebrated, believing they had done enough.
Craven Cottage had other ideas. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, substitute Harrison Reed picked up the ball more than 20 yards from goal and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner, sending the home fans into delirium and rescuing a precious point for Fulham.
Despite Liverpool finishing with more shots, more possession and a superior xG, they were left to rue missed chances, while Fulham extended their unbeaten run and took confidence into a tough London derby against Chelsea.
Earlier in the day, Tottenham Hotspur were also forced to settle for a draw as Sunderland fought back to earn a 1-1 result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs were the better side in the first half and took the lead after 30 minutes when Ben Davies reacted quickest inside the six-yard box to divert home Micky van de Ven’s effort. The hosts controlled proceedings before the break and looked well placed to claim all three points.
Sunderland, however, emerged with renewed purpose after the interval. Gradually growing into the game, the visitors increased the tempo and began to ask questions of the Spurs defence.
Their persistence paid off with 10 minutes remaining. Enzo Le Fee combined brilliantly with Brian Brobbey in a slick one-two, before the Dutch striker powered an unstoppable finish past Vicario to level the scores.
Both sides pushed for a late winner, but clear chances were limited, and the points were ultimately shared. The result leaves Spurs languishing in mid-table, while Sunderland continue an impressive campaign that keeps them firmly in the top half.
Round 20 may not have produced a flurry of goals, but the late drama and resilient performances ensured it will be remembered for all the right reasons.
