Gor Mahia Crushed by Pyramids to Exit Champions League

K'Ogalo travelled to Cairo needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg defeat suffered at Nyayo National Stadium, but any hopes of producing a remarkable comeback quickly disappeared as Pyramids won the second leg 5-1 at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium.

Charles Akonnor's side had spoken confidently before the match about correcting the mistakes that had hurt them in Nairobi, but familiar defensive problems resurfaced during another difficult opening half.

Pyramids took the lead in the 27th minute through Walid El Karti, who had also scored in the first leg.

A free-kick found the Moroccan midfielder unmarked and he rose to head beyond Gor Mahia goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, giving the hosts a 3-0 aggregate advantage.

The situation deteriorated further 11 minutes later.

Gor failed to deal with an attacking move down their right side and Nasser Maher completed a neat passing exchange inside the penalty area before curling his finish into the bottom corner for 2-0 on the night.

Pyramids continued to exploit the spaces in Gor's defence and effectively ended the contest during first-half stoppage time.

Youssef Obama connected with a cross in the 46th minute and converted from close range to make it 3-0, leaving the Kenyan champions staring at a five-goal aggregate deficit.

Gor at least produced a response before the interval.

David Okoth capitalised on a momentary lapse in the Pyramids defence and finished neatly to reduce the score to 3-1.

The goal carried historical significance despite the difficult circumstances.

Okoth's strike ended Gor Mahia's 32-year wait for an away goal against Egyptian opposition in CAF competition, with their previous such goal dating back to a meeting with Zamalek in 1994.

It provided a rare positive moment on an otherwise punishing night.

Gor returned for the second half showing greater composure and began putting together more passes through midfield.

They also attempted to attack more directly, looking for Paul Okoth and Shariff Musa with longer deliveries as they searched for another goal.

Pyramids, already firmly in control of the tie, were content to manage the game rather than maintain the relentless pressure of the opening period.

The Egyptians still created the first clear chance after the interval when Abdelrahman Magdy received a pass from Ahmed Abdelkader in the 58th minute but failed to find the target.

Gor then threatened from a Daniel Sakari long throw around the hour mark, although Lesley Otieno could not make clean contact with the loose ball.

For much of the second half, the Kenyan champions succeeded in preventing further damage.

That resistance collapsed in stoppage time.

Mostafa Zico and Mahmoud Zalaka struck late to complete the 5-1 scoreline and underline Pyramids' superiority across the two matches.

The final whistle confirmed a 7-1 aggregate defeat and another early continental exit for the record Kenyan champions.

The result also continued Gor Mahia's deeply troubling record away to Egyptian opposition.

According to the supplied match report, K'Ogalo have now lost all seven of their away CAF matches against Egyptian clubs, conceding 24 goals in the process. The 5-1 defeat was also their heaviest Champions League loss since a 6-0 defeat to CR Belouizdad in 2020.

It is also the second consecutive occasion on which Gor have exited the Champions League at the first preliminary-round stage.

Their previous appearance ended with a 6-0 aggregate defeat to Al Ahly in 2024, meaning Egyptian opposition have now ended their last two Champions League campaigns in emphatic fashion.

The manner of this latest elimination will be particularly disappointing for Akonnor.

Gor conceded twice before half-time in the opening leg in Nairobi and again struggled defensively during the opening 45 minutes in Cairo, where Pyramids scored three times.

Akonnor had emphasised the importance of concentration before the return fixture, but Gor again found themselves trying to recover after conceding multiple early goals.

There was at least some significance attached to Okoth's strike, but it offered little consolation against the scale of the aggregate defeat.

Pyramids now advance to face South Sudan's El Merreikh Bentiu in the second preliminary round after the latter eliminated Somalia's Heegan SC.

Gor Mahia, meanwhile, must quickly turn their attention back to domestic football.

Their continental ambitions are over before the second preliminary round, leaving Akonnor and his players to focus on defending their Kenyan league title and addressing the defensive shortcomings exposed so ruthlessly by Pyramids.

The objective before travelling to Cairo had been redemption.

Instead, K'Ogalo leave Egypt with difficult questions to answer after one of their heaviest aggregate defeats in recent continental history.
