Haaland Fires 10-Man Manchester City Past United in Derby

City played more than an hour with a numerical disadvantage after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, but Manchester United failed to capitalise before Haaland struck on the hour to secure a significant derby victory for Enzo Maresca's side.

The final whistle confirmed City's 1-0 win despite the visitors having been reduced to 10 men for the majority of the contest.

Both teams arrived at Old Trafford after convincing Champions League victories in midweek.

United had beaten Azerbaijani newcomers Sabah 4-0, while City defeated Porto 2-0, setting up the 199th Manchester derby in all competitions and the first league meeting between the clubs with Michael Carrick and Maresca in permanent charge of their respective sides.

Carrick made three changes from the European victory, bringing Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford into his starting XI.

Rashford replaced Benjamin Sesko in attack, joining Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha in United's offensive unit.

City started Haaland ahead of an attacking midfield containing Foden, Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo, with summer signing Elliot Anderson protecting the defence.

The opening exchanges were intense but produced few clear opportunities as both sides attempted to establish control.

United struggled to find rhythm while City initially found it difficult to involve Haaland, who had not even touched the ball after 14 minutes.

Cunha produced one of United's first openings when he found space on the right side of the penalty area but dragged his effort wide.

The complexion of the match changed dramatically in the 23rd minute.

Fernandes challenged Foden near the touchline, with the City midfielder going to ground before reacting by kicking out towards the United captain.

Referee Michael Oliver immediately produced a red card for violent conduct, reducing City to 10 players.

The incident was controversial, with questions also raised over Fernandes' involvement before Foden's retaliation.

However, United suddenly had a numerical advantage and more than an hour in which to exploit it.

They failed to do so.

City reorganised effectively, while Carrick's side lacked urgency and penetration despite controlling more of the ball.

Remarkably, the only shot immediately following Foden's dismissal came from 10-man City, illustrating United's difficulties in converting their extra player into meaningful attacking pressure.

United did finally threaten shortly before half-time.

Enzo Fernandez fouled Youri Tielemans around 25 yards from goal, giving Rashford an inviting free-kick opportunity.

The forward curled an excellent effort beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma but watched it crash against the outside of the left post.

The sides went into the interval goalless.

Despite playing against 10 men for more than 20 minutes, United had generated only 0.16 expected goals during the opening period, while City's figure stood at just 0.09.

Maresca introduced Iliman Ndiaye for Cherki at half-time as City adjusted their attacking structure.

United started the second period with slightly greater intent and came agonisingly close in the 52nd minute.

Kobbie Mainoo tried his luck from outside the penalty area and his dipping strike beat Donnarumma before smashing against the left post.

Rashford then saw a deflected attempt hit the side netting as Old Trafford sensed that the breakthrough might finally be coming.

Instead, the goal arrived at the opposite end.

Haaland found the net in the 60th minute after City constructed a rare attack despite their numerical disadvantage.

The initial move produced confusion over whether the Norwegian was offside, with Fernandez positioned beyond the defensive line.

After a VAR review, the goal was awarded, with a touch from Patrick Dorgu helping keep Haaland onside.

The striker finished with his left foot to silence Old Trafford and put City 1-0 ahead.

It was Haaland's eighth goal in Manchester derbies and his fourth league strike of the season, while he also extended his scoring run to three consecutive Premier League matches.

Carrick responded seven minutes later by introducing Sesko for Tielemans, giving United a recognised centre-forward as they attempted to rescue the contest.

But City remained dangerous despite having only 10 players.

Fernandez almost doubled the lead in the 69th minute when he bent a right-footed strike towards the bottom corner, forcing Senne Lammens into an excellent save that diverted the ball onto the woodwork.

United's best opportunities became increasingly sporadic.

Mbeumo sent a glancing header narrowly across goal following Dalot's cross in the 73rd minute, but City continued defending their penalty area with determination.

Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol protected Donnarumma effectively as United struggled to create the sustained pressure normally expected from a team playing with an extra man.

Frustration began to spill over late in the contest.

Gvardiol was booked for delaying a free-kick before Enzo Fernandez and Maguire were both shown yellow cards after a confrontation near United's penalty area.

Carrick introduced Joshua Zirkzee for Rashford in the 83rd minute, but the hosts remained short of ideas.

City even managed to keep possession in advanced areas during the closing stages, running down valuable seconds while United's urgency increased.

Maguire headed wide from a corner in the 86th minute as another opening disappeared.

United finally created one last major chance deep into stoppage time.

Fernandes threaded Mbeumo through the City defence and the forward fired quickly towards goal.

Donnarumma reacted brilliantly, producing a superb save to tip the shot behind and preserve City's advantage.

The resulting corner came to nothing, and City celebrated a memorable derby victory moments later.

For Maresca, the result represented a significant demonstration of his team's resilience.

Losing Foden after only 23 minutes could easily have transformed the match in United's favour, but City remained organised, defended courageously and still possessed enough attacking quality for Haaland to punish their rivals.

United will have far more difficult questions to answer.

Carrick's side had an extra player for more than two-thirds of the match but lacked the speed, movement and creativity required to break down City's reorganised defence.

They hit the woodwork twice and eventually forced Donnarumma into an outstanding late save, yet long periods of their attacking play remained predictable.

The defeat leaves United with four points from their opening four league matches after previously losing to Hull City, beating Ipswich Town and drawing with Everton.

City, meanwhile, continue their strong opening to the campaign with another victory and, perhaps more importantly, the satisfaction of winning a Manchester derby at Old Trafford while playing with 10 men for more than an hour.

Haaland supplied the goal.

City's defence supplied the resilience.

And United were left to reflect on a major opportunity missed.
