  • Premier League Round 21 delivered drama at both Turf Moor and the Etihad Stadium as Burnley denied Manchester United a winning start after Ruben Amorim’s exit, while Brighton claimed a vital point away to champions Manchester City to further shake up the title race.

There were mixed emotions at Turf Moor on Wednesday night as Burnley and Manchester United played out an absorbing 2-2 draw in a contest that reflected the uncertainty surrounding both clubs this season.

Burnley struck first inside 13 minutes when good work down the left ended in misfortune for United defender Ayden Heaven, whose deflection looped over Senne Lammens for an own goal. Despite taking the lead, Scott Parker’s side struggled to turn possession into clear chances and reached the break ahead without registering a shot on target.

United grew into the game late in the first half and carried that momentum into the second period. Their pressure was rewarded five minutes after the restart when Bruno Fernandes, making his first start after injury, threaded a perfectly weighted pass through for Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian striker swept home calmly to end his long league goal drought.

Ten minutes later, United completed the turnaround. Patrick Dorgu combined smartly down the left before delivering an inviting cross that Sesko met with a composed volley into the far corner. It looked like the perfect platform for United to open a new chapter in the post Amorim era.

Burnley, however, refused to fold. Parker’s decision to introduce Jaidon Anthony proved inspired as the winger equalised in spectacular fashion on 66 minutes, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling an unstoppable strike into the top corner. It was Burnley’s only shot on target of the night, but it was enough to earn a precious point.

Late drama nearly tilted the contest United’s way as 18 year old Shea Lacey made an eye catching cameo, rattling the crossbar within seconds of coming on and then narrowly missing with a 40 yard effort in stoppage time. In the end, the draw leaves United sixth and Burnley still winless in 12 league games, edging closer to the relegation zone.

Earlier in the evening at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton in another significant twist in the title race.

City dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a disciplined Brighton side until Erling Haaland stepped up just before the interval. The Norwegian converted a penalty after Jeremy Doku was brought down, ending a three match scoring drought and registering his 20th Premier League goal of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s men failed to build on that advantage after the break and were punished on the hour mark. Kaoru Mitoma glided in from the left and curled a precise finish into the bottom corner to level the scores, punishing City’s missed chances.

Despite late pressure, heroic defending from Jan Paul van Hecke and Ferdi Kadioglu denied City a winner, while Haaland was twice thwarted in the closing stages. The result leaves City second in the table, five points behind leaders Arsenal, having underperformed their expected goals.

For Brighton, the point keeps them comfortably mid table and continues their habit of troubling the league’s elite away from home. For City, it was another missed opportunity that could yet prove costly in a tightening title race.
