Hull City marked their Premier League return in stunning fashion by defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

First-half goals from centre-backs Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy secured all three points for Hull as Michael Carrick's United failed to turn overwhelming possession into goals.

Hull entered the contest as underdogs, with the pre-match Opta prediction giving them only an 11 percent chance of victory, but the hosts produced a disciplined and aggressive performance to upset United.

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute when Ajayi punished United from a set-piece situation to put Hull ahead.

It was the start of a difficult afternoon for the visitors, who enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to create clear opportunities against a compact Hull defence.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 38th minute, once again exploiting a set piece.

A dangerous delivery into the penalty area found Mendy, who beat the United defence to score on his Hull debut and make it 2-0.

Both goals came from Hull defenders and both originated from set pieces, giving the home side a deserved two-goal advantage at half-time.

United had opportunities to respond before the interval.

Luke Shaw's delivery created a chance for Bryan Mbeumo, whose bicycle kick was comfortably saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. Bruno Fernandes also saw an effort blocked during first-half stoppage time.

Carrick attempted to change the contest at half-time by introducing Marcus Rashford for Patrick Dorgu.

It marked Rashford's first Premier League appearance in a Manchester United shirt since December 2024.

United continued to dominate the ball after the restart but Hull remained organised and repeatedly dealt with crosses and attacks around their penalty area.

Carrick later introduced Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko as United pushed more players forward in search of a way back into the contest.

Mbeumo came close in the 78th minute after Matheus Cunha released him through on goal, but Tzolakis produced an important save to preserve Hull's clean sheet.

Hull remained dangerous on the counter themselves, with substitute Cody Drameh sending a low effort narrowly wide as United committed more players forward.

Despite finishing the match with 70 percent possession and registering 21 goal attempts compared to Hull's eight, United could not find a breakthrough.

Hull's defensive organisation ensured that much of the visitors' attacking pressure produced little genuine danger.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-0 victory for the Tigers and their first league win over Manchester United since 1974. The significance of that potential landmark had been noted late in the contest before Hull successfully protected their advantage.

The result provided Hull with a dream start to their Premier League campaign, while Carrick was left with an immediate setback and questions to address following United's ineffective attacking display.

Hull ended the afternoon second in the early Premier League standings, behind defending champions Arsenal on goal difference, while United dropped to 19th.
