Brighton Stun Manchester United After Two-Goal EFL Cup Collapse

Shea Lacey and Mason Mount gave United what appeared to be the perfect start with two goals inside the opening 10 minutes, but Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back before half-time before Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper completed Brighton's comeback in the second period.

The defeat continued a difficult few days for Michael Carrick's side following their 1-0 Manchester derby loss to Manchester City and means United have been eliminated in their opening League Cup tie for a second consecutive season.

Carrick made eight changes to his starting XI, with England Under-20 international Lacey handed his first senior start and Karl Darlow making his United debut in goal.

Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven started together in central defence, while Rashford, Diogo Dalot and captain Youri Tielemans were the three players retained from the derby defeat.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler made six changes of his own, with Jason Steele starting in goal and Jaouen Hadjam making his debut at left wing-back.

United could hardly have asked for a better opening.

Lacey announced himself in spectacular fashion after only eight minutes.

Tielemans switched possession towards the right, where the teenager collected the ball, cut onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful strike beyond Steele from the edge of the penalty area.

It was a memorable way to mark his first start for the club.

The goal also made the 19-year-old the first teenager to score on his first Manchester United start since Marcus Rashford did so against Midtjylland in 2016.

United doubled their advantage only two minutes later.

Rashford drove into the Brighton penalty area from the left and forced Steele into a save, but the goalkeeper could only push the ball into the path of Mount.

The midfielder arrived at the right moment and volleyed into the turf before watching the ball bounce into the net for 2-0.

For a United team looking for an immediate response to their derby defeat, the opening 10 minutes appeared to provide exactly that.

But the complexion of the match gradually changed.

Instead of using the two-goal cushion to establish control, United became increasingly passive and allowed Brighton to grow into the contest.

The visitors began dominating possession for longer periods, with Malick Yalcouye and Gross both finding opportunities as United's early attacking threat faded.

United had produced three shots on target from their first four attempts, but their final effort of the opening half came as early as the 12th minute. Brighton, by contrast, accumulated eight first-half attempts and an expected-goals figure of 0.92 compared with United's 0.30.

Brighton's growing pressure was rewarded in first-half stoppage time.

Hadjam produced an excellent direct pass for Kostoulas, who controlled it while running towards goal before squeezing his finish past Darlow at the near post.

The 45+1-minute strike reduced the deficit to 2-1 and completely changed the mood heading into the interval.

United still led, but Brighton had seized the momentum.

Carrick's side briefly threatened after the restart, with Steele racing from his goal to deny Benjamin Sesko following a long pass.

The hosts, however, struggled to regain the authority they had shown during those opening minutes.

Brighton continued pressing high and increasingly forced United into mistakes when attempting to play out from defence.

The equaliser arrived in the 65th minute.

United failed to clear their lines convincingly and Luka Vuskovic reacted quickly, heading the loose ball back towards the centre.

Gross was left unmarked, controlled the situation superbly and turned inside his defender before calmly slotting a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner.

It was 2-2, but Brighton were not finished.

Only four minutes later, the turnaround was complete.

Kostoulas was released down the right side of United's penalty area and cut the ball back into the middle.

The pass reached substitute De Cuyper, who powered a right-footed finish across Darlow to give Brighton a 3-2 lead.

United had gone from two goals ahead after 10 minutes to trailing before the 70th.

Carrick responded by calling on several senior players.

Bruno Fernandes replaced Mount, Kobbie Mainoo came on for Andrey Santos, Bryan Mbeumo replaced goalscorer Lacey and Joshua Zirkzee took Sesko's place as United attempted to salvage the tie. 

The changes failed to restore control.

Brighton continued creating opportunities and could have extended their lead, while United's best late chance fell to Rashford in the 77th minute.

The forward was played clean through and had time to choose his finish, but Steele spread himself and made an important save with his foot.

Brighton remained organised during the closing stages despite growing pressure from the hosts.

Fernandes fired over from distance in stoppage time, but United could not find the equaliser required to keep their cup campaign alive.

The final whistle confirmed Brighton's first cup victory over United and their fifth win in their last six visits to Old Trafford.

The underlying numbers reflected the direction the match had taken after United's explosive beginning.

Brighton finished with approximately 2.15 expected goals compared with United's 1.04, having recovered from a position that appeared extremely difficult after only 10 minutes.

Gross was central to the comeback.

Along with scoring Brighton's equaliser, the experienced midfielder controlled large periods of the contest and received 62 percent of the votes in the late player-of-the-match poll.

For Lacey, meanwhile, an impressive full debut ended in disappointment.

His superb opening goal offered another glimpse of his potential, but United were unable to build on either his strike or Mount's quick second goal.

The result leaves Carrick facing further questions after two defeats in four days.

United had seemingly responded perfectly to their Manchester derby disappointment, only to surrender control and allow Brighton to score three unanswered goals.

Brighton advance to the fourth round, while United's EFL Cup campaign is over almost as quickly as it began.
