Palmer Sparks Chelsea Comeback in Nine-Goal Leeds Thriller

Xabi Alonso's side appeared to be heading towards a shock elimination when Leeds moved 2-0 ahead shortly after half-time, but four interval substitutions transformed the contest as Cole Palmer scored twice before Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco completed an extraordinary turnaround.

The result was particularly dramatic considering Leeds had been the better side for much of the opening 45 minutes.

Alonso made nine changes from the Chelsea team beaten 2-1 by Arsenal in the Premier League, with 16-year-old Reggie Watson handed his senior debut.

Danny Welbeck retained his place after scoring against Luton Town in the previous round, while Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Reece James and Neto were among the senior players initially named on the bench.

Chelsea started brightly, with Jamie Gittens producing the first meaningful effort after cutting inside from the left and testing Michael Zetterer.

The hosts nearly created another opening moments later when Gittens found Welbeck, who squared towards Estevao, only for James Justin to make an excellent last-ditch intervention.

Leeds gradually took control and began causing serious problems from set-pieces.

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders was forced into an excellent double save in the 22nd minute after Ethan Ampadu's long throw created confusion inside the area.

Penders first stopped Brenden Aaronson from close range before recovering to tip Tarik Muharemovic's looping header over the crossbar.

The warning was not heeded.

Two minutes later, Harry Wilson delivered another dangerous set-piece towards the far post and Muharemovic peeled away from his marker before directing a looping header across Penders and into the net.

It was the Bosnia and Herzegovina defender's first Leeds goal and gave Daniel Farke's side a deserved 1-0 advantage.

Leeds continued creating the better chances as Chelsea struggled to impose themselves.

By half-time, the visitors had accumulated 1.52 expected goals compared with Chelsea's 0.33, with Aaronson, Muharemovic, Lukas Nmecha and Sean Longstaff all contributing to a threatening attacking display.

Chelsea did create openings through Barco, Gittens and Welbeck, but Leeds carried their one-goal advantage into the interval.

Alonso reacted decisively.

Watson's senior debut ended after 45 minutes as James was introduced, while Palmer, Rogers and Neto were also sent on as part of four half-time substitutions.

The changes would ultimately transform Chelsea's evening, although Leeds struck again before the hosts could settle.

Just three minutes after the restart, Ampadu attacked down the flank before delivering into the penalty area.

Nmecha cleverly redirected the ball into Aaronson's path, allowing the United States international to finish into the bottom corner and make it 2-0.

At that point, Chelsea appeared to be heading out.

What followed was one of the most explosive spells of the EFL Cup season.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute after Pep Chavarria was caught late inside the area.

Palmer stepped forward and calmly converted into the bottom-right corner in the 53rd minute, immediately giving the hosts hope.

Only two minutes later, Chelsea were level.

Rogers reacted to a throw-in and produced a clever flick into Palmer's path. The midfielder took his time before bending a controlled left-footed finish beyond Zetterer and into the bottom corner.

There were only two minutes and 11 seconds between Palmer's two goals.

Chelsea had gone from apparent elimination to complete momentum in a matter of minutes.

The turnaround was completed on the hour mark.

Palmer played a penetrating pass through midfield before Rogers stretched to redirect the ball into Neto's path.

The Portugal international arrived at pace and curled a low finish into the bottom-left corner to put Chelsea 3-2 ahead.

Five minutes later, the Blues struck again.

Rogers raced past Muharemovic down the right before pulling the ball back towards the centre.

Welbeck produced a superb touch to move away from two defenders before finishing to make it 4-2.

It was Rogers' third assist in barely 10 minutes and completed an astonishing spell in which Chelsea had scored four times in just 12 minutes after trailing by two.

Leeds refused to surrender.

Farke introduced Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor as his team searched for a route back into the contest.

The substitutes combined in the 75th minute.

Okafor was released down the left and drove into the penalty area before squaring towards Calvert-Lewin, who arrived to fire a first-time finish beneath Penders.

At 4-3, the tie was alive again Chelsea's response was immediate.

Five minutes later, Palmer won possession around halfway and the Blues flooded forward.

Neto eventually released Rogers on the right and his ball across goal caused problems for Zetterer before Barco collected the loose ball and drove a left-footed finish into the far corner.

The goal restored Chelsea's two-goal cushion at 5-3.

Leeds continued searching for another comeback, but Chelsea now had too much space to exploit on the counter.

The hosts completed the scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Another flowing attack ended with Palmer moving the ball towards Barco on the edge of the area.

Barco attempted a first-time strike, but his mis-hit effort struck Welbeck and flew beyond Zetterer, giving the striker his second goal of the night and Chelsea their sixth.

The final whistle confirmed a remarkable 6-3 victory and Chelsea's passage into the fourth round.

The scoreline suggested overwhelming attacking superiority from Chelsea, although the underlying numbers showed how competitive the contest had been.

Chelsea finished with an expected-goals total of 2.40 compared with Leeds' 2.39, but the Blues' ruthless second-half finishing ultimately separated the sides.

Palmer's quickfire double changed the momentum, while Rogers' introduction was equally influential.

The £117 million midfielder registered three assists in a devastating spell after coming off the bench and received 69 percent of the votes in the late player-of-the-match poll, ahead of Palmer.

Welbeck also finished with two goals, having now scored in each of his first two EFL Cup appearances for Chelsea.

For Alonso, the result demonstrated both the depth and attacking potential available in his squad.

His heavily rotated starting side struggled badly against Leeds, but the introduction of Palmer, Rogers, Neto and James at the break changed the contest completely.

Chelsea had been 2-0 down after 48 minutes.

Twelve minutes later, they were 3-2 ahead.

By full-time, they had scored six and secured their place in the next round after one of the most dramatic matches of their season.
