Odegaard Thunderbolt Fires Arsenal Past Napoli in Champions League Opener

The Arsenal captain broke the deadlock in the 75th minute after Mikel Arteta's side had dominated large periods of the contest but repeatedly failed to convert their opportunities.

Arsenal eventually finished with an extraordinary 4.05 expected goals compared with Napoli's 0.22, illustrating just how much control the Premier League champions had despite the narrow final score.

The victory gives last season's Champions League runners-up a winning start as they begin another attempt to capture the European trophy that narrowly escaped them in the previous campaign.

Arteta made four changes from the team that defeated Chelsea in the Premier League, with Piero Hincapie, Mikel Merino, Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze coming into the starting XI.

David Raya started behind a defence of Ben White, Ezri Konsa, Gabriel Magalhaes and Hincapie. Declan Rice, Merino and Odegaard formed the midfield, with Bukayo Saka and Eze supporting Gyokeres in attack.

Napoli, under Massimiliano Allegri, included former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne alongside Billy Gilmour and Stanislav Lobotka, while Rasmus Hojlund led the attack.

Arsenal quickly established control and began creating opportunities against a Napoli side prepared to defend deep and attack on the counter.

Saka produced one of the visitors' first openings in the 13th minute after Gyokeres picked him out with an outside-of-the-boot cross. The England international improvised an overhead attempt, but Alex Meret was positioned to make the save.

Napoli briefly threatened through De Bruyne and Matteo Politano, forcing Raya into routine interventions as the hosts attempted to exploit the spaces left when Arsenal pushed forward.

The biggest chance of the opening stages fell to Merino in the 22nd minute.

Saka cut inside from the right before delivering towards Eze at the back post. Eze headed the ball back across goal for Merino, who connected from close range but directed his effort too close to Meret, allowing the goalkeeper to make an excellent reaction save.

Eze dragged a shot wide after another clever attacking combination before White fired directly at Meret from a good position.

Saka then wasted another major opportunity shortly before the interval.

Odegaard threaded an excellent pass through the Napoli defence to release the winger, who shifted onto his left foot but sent his effort over the crossbar.

Despite the score remaining 0-0 at half-time, Arsenal had accumulated 13 shots, It was Arsenal's highest recorded number of first-half attempts in a Champions League away match.

Arsenal immediately pushed Napoli back into their own half, with Odegaard increasingly influential in directing attacks.

Hincapie came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock five minutes into the second period after Odegaard lifted a clever pass towards White. The defender headed it into a dangerous area, but Hincapie could not make the decisive contact from close range.

Bruno Guimaraes replaced Merino in the 65th minute before Christos Tzolis came on for Eze a minute later.

After Arsenal had spent another period probing for an opening, Tzolis collected possession near the edge of the Napoli penalty area in the 75th minute and picked out Odegaard.

The captain allowed the ball to travel across his body before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that crashed off the inside of the left post and into the net.

It was a spectacular finish worthy of deciding a match Arsenal had controlled for long periods.

Tzolis registered the assist, his fourth in five appearances during his impressive start to the campaign.

Napoli responded by introducing additional attacking options, including David Neres and Lorenzo Lucca, but Arsenal remained defensively disciplined.

The visitors should have put the contest beyond doubt in the 85th minute.

Kai Havertz released Noni Madueke one-on-one, but the winger failed to convert before Tzolis saw the follow-up blocked.

By the 86th minute, Arsenal had registered 24 attempts, setting a club record for shots in a Champions League away match since such records began in 2003/04.

Napoli still had one late opportunity to punish Arsenal's wastefulness.

De Bruyne received the ball inside the area in the 88th minute but appeared caught between shooting and crossing. His dangerous ball flashed across Raya's goal without a Napoli player arriving to convert.

Arsenal thought they had finally scored a second deep into stoppage time when Havertz converted after Tzolis' initial effort was saved, but the substitute was correctly ruled offside.

The final whistle therefore confirmed a 1-0 Arsenal victory and another clean sheet.

The performance again highlighted the defensive strength that carried Arteta's team to the Champions League final last season.

Arsenal conceded only seven goals across 15 matches during their 2025/26 European campaign, the fewest of any team in the competition, and Napoli found similarly little space against them in Naples.

The Gunners will nevertheless know their finishing must improve. Creating more than four expected goals and scoring only once left Napoli within one moment of an unlikely equaliser until the final whistle.

For Arteta, however, three points away from home and a clean sheet represent an excellent foundation for another European campaign.

Arsenal now return to Premier League action with an away fixture against Sunderland, while Napoli will attempt to recover from three consecutive defeats when they host Bologna.
