Arsenal produced a ruthless second-half display to beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium and continue their strong start to the Champions League campaign.

Mikel Arteta's side were frustrated for more than an hour before Jurrien Timber broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, with Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka striking soon afterwards to put the contest beyond the French side.

The Gunners controlled much of the opening half but struggled to turn their possession into clear chances.

Bruno Guimaraes had one of Arsenal's best early opportunities after Noni Madueke found Timber on the right and the defender pulled the ball back into his path, but the midfielder side-footed wide.

Lille briefly thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Ayase Ueda finished past David Raya, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR check.

Arsenal continued to push, with Mikel Merino testing goalkeeper Berke Ozer before another Guimaraes effort was deflected and kept out late in the half.

The teams therefore went into the interval goalless, with Arsenal holding the greater attacking threat but unable to find the decisive final pass. Pasted text

The pattern continued after the restart as Arsenal increased the pressure, although Lille remained organised and difficult to break down.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute.

Madueke found space on the right before playing the ball into Timber's path. The Dutch defender produced an excellent first touch before lifting his finish beyond Ozer and into the top corner to give Arsenal a deserved lead.

Arteta then introduced Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz in a triple substitution, and the changes immediately transformed Arsenal's attacking threat.

Just three minutes after the opening goal, Odegaard won possession before releasing Saka down the right. The winger pulled the ball back for Eze, who swept his finish home at the near post to make it 2-0.

Arsenal were not finished.

In the 71st minute, Odegaard helped create another flowing move before Havertz delivered the final pass for Saka, who calmly rolled the ball beyond Ozer to complete a devastating seven-minute spell.

Saka's impact from the bench proved decisive, with the England international contributing both a goal and an assist after his introduction. Pasted text

Lille were unable to recover as Arsenal comfortably managed the closing stages and secured a clean sheet alongside all three points.

The Gunners finished with an expected goals figure of 1.85 compared to Lille's 0.38, while the victory gave Arsenal two wins from their opening two Champions League league-phase matches.

Arteta will also take encouragement from the influence of his substitutes, with Saka, Odegaard and Havertz all directly involved during the spell that turned a tight contest into a convincing Arsenal victory.
