Defending champions Gor Mahia made a flying start to their league title defence after defeating Murang’a Seal 4-2 in an entertaining encounter at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday night.

Shariff Musa scored twice for K’Ogalo, while Alpha Onyango and Jackson Dwang produced spectacular strikes as the record Kenyan champions collected maximum points from their opening match of the campaign.

Former Gor Mahia forward Josphat Lopaga scored both goals for Murang’a Seal during a late fightback, but the damage had already been done following a dominant second-half display from Charles Akonnor’s side.

Gor Mahia needed only five minutes to break the deadlock.

Harambee Stars midfielder Onyango stepped up for a free kick from the right and curled a superb effort towards the top corner, with the ball clipping the crossbar before finding the net beyond goalkeeper Melvin Nderitu.

The early goal allowed Gor to dictate proceedings, with Patrick Esombe and Musa causing problems for the Murang’a defence.

Musa came close to doubling the advantage in the 16th minute when his attempt went narrowly wide.

Murang’a Seal gradually settled into the contest and began creating opportunities of their own. Thaddeus Pkiach threatened from a set piece before Majaliwa Charo struck the side netting as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

Goalkeeper Kevin Omondi was then called into action to deny Pkiach before Gor survived another scare when Charo sent an effort narrowly wide.

Murang’a continued to apply pressure towards the end of the opening half, but Gor protected their advantage and headed into the interval leading 1-0.

The champions returned for the second half with greater purpose and doubled their lead shortly after the restart.

Onyango helped Gor regain possession deep inside their own half before Frank Odhiambo released Musa with a penetrating pass. The winger beat his marker before finishing past Nderitu to make it 2-0.

Gor then produced one of the outstanding moments of the match in the 56th minute.

Dwang spotted Nderitu positioned away from his goal and launched an audacious long-range effort that sailed into the net, giving K’Ogalo a commanding three-goal advantage.

Murang’a Seal were punished again six minutes later.

Gor worked the ball into a dangerous position before a cross from the flank found Musa, who rose to head home his second goal of the evening and extend the champions’ lead to 4-0.

With the result appearing settled, Murang’a introduced Lopaga as they attempted to rescue something from the contest.

The former Gor Mahia forward eventually reduced the deficit in the final quarter of the match, taking advantage of uncertainty in the K’Ogalo defence before finding the net.

Lopaga struck again during the closing stages after Gor afforded him space inside the attacking area, completing his brace and cutting the deficit to two goals.

The comeback came too late, however, as Gor Mahia saw out the remaining minutes to secure a 4-2 victory and three points from their opening league fixture.

The result provided an encouraging start to K’Ogalo’s latest title defence after they reclaimed the Kenyan league crown for a record-extending 22nd time last season.

For Murang’a Seal, the defeat extended their difficult run against Gor Mahia since gaining promotion to the top flight, despite a spirited attacking response late in the contest.

Gor’s combination of Onyango’s set-piece quality, Musa’s clinical finishing and Dwang’s spectacular long-range strike ultimately proved decisive on a memorable night under the Nyayo Stadium floodlights.
