Gor Mahia Move One Win Away From 22nd FKFPL Title

Gor Mahia strengthened their grip on the FKF Premier League title race after beating Murang’a SEAL 3-1 at Nyayo National Stadium, moving four points clear at the top with only two matches left to play.

Gor Mahia moved within touching distance of a record-extending 22nd FKF Premier League title after securing a commanding 3-1 victory over Murang’a SEAL at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The crucial victory pushed K’Ogalo to 68 points, four ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards, who had earlier reduced the gap with a win over Kakamega Homeboyz. Gor Mahia now require just one more victory from their remaining two matches to officially clinch the league crown.

The league leaders started brightly and immediately pinned Murang’a SEAL inside their own half with sustained pressure and a series of early corner kicks. Despite Gor Mahia’s strong start, the hosts nearly stunned the visitors in the 10th minute when Michael Owen curled a dangerous free-kick narrowly wide.

Murang’a continued to threaten and almost grabbed the opener four minutes later after Michael Macharia forced Bryne Omondi into a strong save with a powerful strike from range.

Gor Mahia eventually broke the deadlock in the 18th minute through skipper Samuel Kapen. Ben Stanley delivered a perfectly weighted pass behind the defence and Kapen calmly dribbled past goalkeeper Boniface Ngamau before slotting home to hand K’Ogalo a deserved 1-0 lead.

The goal lifted Gor Mahia’s intensity as Shariff Musa repeatedly caused problems down the left wing with his pace and direct attacking runs.

Murang’a SEAL refused to back down and continued piling pressure on the visitors. Joseph Waithira came close with a fierce effort that forced Omondi into another important save before Michael Oloo headed against the post from the resulting corner.

The hosts finally found their equaliser in the 38th minute after a quick attacking move caught the Gor Mahia defence off guard. Lucas Maina flicked on a long ball from goalkeeper Ngamau into the path of Waithira, who kept his composure before firing past Omondi to make it 1-1 heading into the break.

Gor Mahia returned for the second half with renewed urgency and regained the lead in the 52nd minute. Samuel Kapen launched a long throw into the penalty area and after a series of deflections, the ball fell kindly for Shariff Musa, who finished clinically to restore K’Ogalo’s advantage.

Musa continued tormenting the Murang’a defence moments later with another dangerous run and cross that forced Ngamau into a hurried punch away from goal.

Murang’a SEAL attempted to respond with tactical substitutions, introducing fresh legs in search of another equaliser, but Gor Mahia’s experience and composure proved decisive as the match progressed.

The visitors sealed all three points in the 76th minute when substitute Ebenezer Assifuah finished off a brilliant attacking move started by Musa. The winger sprinted down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint pass that Assifuah converted calmly to make it 3-1.

Gor Mahia even had further goals ruled out late in the match, but by then the result was already beyond doubt as the reigning champions closed in on another league triumph.

Despite the defeat, Murang’a SEAL striker Joe Waithira enhanced his reputation with another impressive display and remained among the league’s top scorers this season.

Gor Mahia will now shift their focus to a decisive clash against Mara Sugar, knowing victory could officially crown them FKF Premier League champions once again.
