K’Ogalo Roar Back to Reclaim Top Spot with Kasarani Classic
- Gor Mahia came from two goals down to stun Murang’a SEAL 3–2 at Kasarani, snapping the visitors’ long unbeaten run and reclaiming the FKF Premier League summit in dramatic fashion.
Gor Mahia once again reminded the league why they are never beaten until the final whistle, staging a breathtaking comeback to edge Murang’a SEAL 3–2 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Wednesday night.
The evening began in nightmare fashion for the hosts. Murang’a SEAL silenced the Kasarani crowd almost immediately when Joe Waithira struck in the fourth minute, pouncing on a swift attacking move to beat the Gor Mahia goalkeeper. Before K’Ogalo could settle, the visitors struck again, with former Kariobangi Sharks forward Francis Memusi doubling the lead inside the opening half hour, leaving Gor Mahia staring at an uphill task.
At 2–0 down, and with SEAL riding an impressive unbeaten run, Gor Mahia looked rattled. Murang’a were organised, confident, and threatening on the break, while the champions struggled to impose themselves for large spells of the first half.
Everything changed after the interval.
Gor Mahia emerged from the tunnel with renewed intensity, pressing higher and moving the ball with urgency. Just two minutes after the restart, Felix Oluoch capitalised on a spill by SEAL goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor to pull one back and reignite belief inside the stadium.
The momentum swung decisively moments later. In the 49th minute, Paul Ochuoga’s effort, aided by a deflection, found the net to level the scores at 2–2, sending Kasarani into pure pandemonium as the Green Army sensed blood.
Head coach Charles Akonnor’s influence soon became evident. His tactical adjustments, coupled with timely substitutions, shifted the balance firmly in Gor Mahia’s favour. The introduction of Ebenezer Assifuah proved inspired.
With Murang’a SEAL clinging on, the decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Assifuah, calm under pressure, slotted home from close range to complete a stunning turnaround and cap one of Gor Mahia’s most memorable comebacks of the season.
The victory propelled Gor Mahia back to the top of the FKF Premier League standings with 30 points from 15 matches, level with AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference. It also brought an end to Murang’a SEAL’s impressive unbeaten run, leaving them ninth on 21 points from 16 games and reflecting on what might have been.
On a night filled with drama and momentum swings, Kasarani once again proved to be a fortress of belief. Gor Mahia flexed their championship muscle, delivering a reminder to the rest of the league that no lead is ever safe when K’Ogalo decide to turn up the heat.
Elsewhere in the league, Kenya Police FC’s struggles continued as they were held to a 1–1 draw by Mara Sugar. Yves Koutiama gave Police an early lead, but Joseph Okwenda’s well-taken free kick earned Mara a share of the spoils. Police remain fifth on 24 points from 15 matches, while Mara sit 12th with 20 points after 16 games.
