Gor Mahia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards in the 99th Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, April 26, with captain Alpha Onyango delivering the decisive moment late in the contest.

The midfielder struck in the closing stages, finishing off a well-delivered ball from left-back Bryton Onyona after a half-cleared corner to hand K’Ogalo maximum points in a tightly contested encounter.

The win was significant for Gor Mahia, who were desperate to end a three-match winless run and strengthen their grip on the FKF Premier League title race. The result pushed them to 61 points, opening a six-point cushion over second-placed AFC Leopards with only a handful of matches remaining in the 2025/26 season.

For AFC Leopards, who remain on 55 points, the defeat dealt a major blow to their title ambitions and marked a bitter moment for head coach Fred Ambani, who suffered his first-ever loss to Gor Mahia in both his playing and coaching career.

Gor Mahia started brightly and nearly took an early lead through Enock Morrison, whose effort from a quick corner narrowly missed the target. The early exchanges saw K’Ogalo dominate possession and create the clearer chances, forcing AFC Leopards goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi into a series of impressive saves.

Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw came close midway through the first half after being picked out by Onyango, but Katasi reacted sharply to deny him. The Leopards shot-stopper was again called into action moments later, producing back-to-back saves to keep his side level as Gor piled on the pressure.

Patrick Essombe also had a golden opportunity before halftime but failed to connect cleanly with a backheel attempt, while AFC Leopards’ best chance came in stoppage time when Kayci Odhiambo’s free-kick drifted narrowly wide.

After the break, Ingwe returned with renewed energy and enjoyed a spell of dominance, but they struggled to convert their chances. Gor Mahia responded with tactical adjustments, including the introduction of Ebenezer Assifuah, whose immediate impact added fresh attacking impetus.

Controversy briefly threatened to overshadow the game when AFC Leopards appealed for a penalty after Victor Omune’s effort appeared to strike Frank Odhiambo’s hand inside the area, but the referee waved play on.

Moments later, Gor Mahia made their pressure count. Onyona floated a dangerous delivery into the box, and Onyango showed composure to control before slotting home, finally breaking Katasi’s resistance and sending the K’Ogalo faithful into celebration.

AFC Leopards pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Gor Mahia’s defence held firm to secure a vital clean sheet and complete a measure of revenge after losing the first leg by the same scoreline earlier in the season.

The result keeps Gor Mahia firmly on course to reclaim the FKF Premier League title from Kenya Police FC, while also underlining the enduring intensity and importance of the Mashemeji Derby in Kenyan football.

With only a few matches left, the title race remains alive, but Gor Mahia now hold a commanding advantage as they look to finish the season strongly.
