Gor Mahia Edge Shabana To Extend League Lead
- Gor Mahia battled from a fiercely contested encounter to defeat Shabana FC 2-1 at Nyayo National Stadium, stretching their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League standings.
Gor Mahia delivered a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Shabana FC in an entertaining FKF Premier League clash at Nyayo National Stadium, with decisive moments in both halves proving the difference in a match full of intensity and attacking football.
The game started at a high tempo, with Shabana showing early attacking intent. Brian Michira had the first sight of goal in the fifth minute but opted to go alone instead of releasing Keith Imbali, sending his effort over the bar. Moments later, Bronson attempted to combine with Imbali down the flank, though the move broke down before it could trouble Gor Mahia.
Gor Mahia gradually settled into the contest, with Bryton Onyona and Samuel Kapen linking up in the eighth minute, but their final delivery failed to penetrate the Shabana defence. Paul Ochuoga came close shortly after following a defensive lapse, but could not get a clean touch to capitalise.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute through a moment of individual brilliance. Ebenezer Adukwaw glided past multiple defenders with a powerful run before setting up Jackson Dwang, who calmly curled the ball into the net to give K’Ogalo the lead.
Shabana responded almost instantly. Just a minute after the restart, Wycliffe Awiko Omondi struck to level matters at 1-1, restoring parity and setting up a fiercely contested battle.
Gor Mahia continued to press, with Shariff Musa a constant threat in attack. The forward forced a string of saves from Shabana goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng, who produced an outstanding performance, including a superb reflex stop just before halftime to keep his side level.
The second half maintained the same intensity, with both sides pushing for a winner. Omondi and Alpha Onyango were booked early as the tempo rose, while Shabana created opportunities through Michira and Imbali. However, Gor Mahia goalkeeper Gad Mathews remained alert, producing a crucial save in the 71st minute to deny Michira from a dangerous free kick.
Gor Mahia turned to their bench for inspiration, introducing Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah to inject fresh energy into the attack.
The decisive moment came in the 79th minute when captain Alpha Onyango rose highest to meet a well-delivered corner from Jackson Dwang, guiding his header into the far corner to restore Gor Mahia’s lead.
Shabana pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, but Gor Mahia managed the closing stages with composure despite a few nervy moments and late bookings. Tactical substitutions in the final minutes helped the league leaders see out the result.
The victory moves Gor Mahia to 56 points, extending their advantage at the top of the FKF Premier League to ten points. The result also spoiled the debut of Shabana interim coach Andrew Mark Ongwae, as K’Ogalo maintained their dominance with another crucial win.
