Villarreal delivered a ruthless first-half performance to secure a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad in Friday night’s LaLiga clash at Estadio de la Ceramica.

The Yellow Submarine needed only 23 minutes to put the match firmly in their control, with Gerard Moreno, Georges Mikautadze and Nicolas Pepe all finding the net in a blistering opening spell.

It took Villarreal just seven minutes to break the deadlock. From a corner, Santi Comesana provided the assist and Moreno was perfectly placed to head home from close range for 1-0.

The home side kept pressing and were rewarded again in the 15th minute. Moreno forced Alex Remiro into a save, but Mikautadze reacted quickest to the rebound and converted from very close range to double Villarreal’s advantage.

Real Sociedad were struggling to contain Villarreal’s sharp movement and direct attacking play, and the third goal soon followed. In the 23rd minute, Mikautadze turned provider after a fast break, slipping the ball into the path of Pepe, who calmly finished into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

That rapid-fire start left the visitors with a mountain to climb.

Real Sociedad did create a few openings before the break, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Goncalo Guedes both testing Luiz Junior, but Villarreal looked the more dangerous side throughout the first half. Pepe nearly added a fourth before the interval when he struck the crossbar after another flowing move.

The visitors tried to respond after the restart and found a goal just two minutes into the second half. Luka Sucic, introduced at half-time, reduced the deficit with a left-footed finish from the right side of the box after a corner to give Real Sociedad a glimmer of hope.

For a brief spell, the away side pushed for another goal and looked more aggressive in possession, but Villarreal managed the game with control and maturity. Luiz Junior remained alert when called upon, while Remiro had to make several important saves at the other end to keep the scoreline respectable.

Mikautadze came close to adding to his tally in the second half, while Pape Gueye and Pepe also threatened as Villarreal continued to create openings on the counter.

Real Sociedad’s late pressure did not produce the comeback they wanted, with Sucic and Arsen Zakharyan both missing chances in the closing stages. Villarreal, meanwhile, stayed organised and saw out the contest comfortably to collect all three points.

It was a result built on an explosive opening quarter and clinical finishing, with Moreno and Mikautadze leading the charge and Pepe capping a fine attacking display.

For Villarreal, this was an important and convincing victory against one of their direct LaLiga rivals. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, were left to rue a dreadful first half that ultimately decided the outcome.
