Villarreal secured a valuable 2-1 victory over Elche in their LaLiga Round 27 clash on Sunday at Estadio de la Ceramica, surviving a late scare after Andre Silva's second-half strike threatened to spark a comeback.

The hosts took control of the match during an energetic first half, capitalising on their attacking momentum to build a two-goal lead before the break.

Villarreal opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Tajon Buchanan produced a clinical finish from the right side of the box. The Canadian winger was set up by Pape Gueye and fired a precise shot into the top-right corner, giving goalkeeper Matias Dituro little chance.

The Yellow Submarine continued to press forward and doubled their advantage ten minutes later. Defender Santiago Mourino found himself in the right place inside the penalty area and finished confidently into the top corner after a well-worked move involving Santi Comesana.

Elche struggled to cope with Villarreal's attacking intensity during the opening period, although they did create several chances of their own. Alvaro Rodriguez and Rafa Mir both tested Luiz Junior, but the Villarreal goalkeeper remained alert to keep the visitors at bay.

The second half saw Elche push forward in search of a way back into the contest. Luiz Junior was forced into several saves, including a sharp stop to deny Rafa Mir and another crucial intervention against Victor Chust as the visitors increased the pressure.

Villarreal also threatened to extend their lead, with Nicolas Pepe and Gerard Moreno both going close. Pepe forced Dituro into a strong save with a curling effort, while Moreno headed wide from a dangerous cross late in the match.

Elche finally found a breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Andre Silva headed home from close range after Martim Neto delivered a well-placed corner. The goal set up a tense finish as the visitors threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser.

Despite the late pressure, Villarreal held firm during five minutes of stoppage time to secure all three points in front of their home supporters.

The victory strengthens Villarreal's push in the LaLiga standings, while Elche are left to reflect on missed opportunities after their late rally fell short.
