Raphinha Hat-Trick Powers Barcelona to Seven-Goal Racing Rout

Hansi Flick's side recorded their biggest victory of the campaign, with Joao Cancelo opening the scoring before Raphinha struck three times, Asier Villalibre turned into his own net, and Gabriel Jesus and Lamine Yamal completed the rout. Maguette Gueye and Yassir Zabiri scored Racing's goals.

The victory maintained Barcelona's perfect league record after they entered the match with five wins from five, 21 goals scored and only four conceded. Racing, back in LaLiga after 15 seasons away, arrived having won two of their opening five games.

Flick made four changes from the side that beat Levante 4-2, bringing Cancelo, Andreas Christensen, Dani Olmo and Karim Adeyemi into the starting line-up. Raphinha captained the side and operated through the middle, supported by Yamal and Adeyemi.

Barcelona needed only eight minutes to make their dominance count.

Yamal recovered possession and switched the ball towards Cancelo, who had been afforded far too much space outside the penalty area.

The Portuguese defender unleashed a powerful right-footed strike from around 20 yards that flew into the top corner beyond Julen Agirrezabala.

Barcelona continued creating chances at will, with Adeyemi particularly dangerous with his pace and movement.

The second goal arrived from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Pedri released Raphinha behind the Racing defence and Pedro Felipe clipped the Brazilian's ankles inside the area.

Raphinha took responsibility and sent Agirrezabala the wrong way, placing his penalty into the bottom-right corner.

Racing responded five minutes later with virtually their first meaningful attack.

Sergio Canales helped work the ball towards Aaron Martin on the left before his cross reached Villalibre.

The striker's imperfect touch fell into the path of Gueye, who recovered possession brilliantly, skipped beyond two Barcelona defenders and finished past Joan Garcia to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Any suggestion of a Racing comeback was quickly extinguished.

Cancelo again took aim from distance after Barcelona worked a short corner in the 36th minute. His thunderous effort flew towards the top corner after taking a deflection off Villalibre, with the goal officially recorded as an own goal against the Racing striker.

Barcelona then struck for a fourth in the 42nd minute.

Adeyemi drove inside and backheeled the ball towards Olmo, who released Raphinha into the penalty area.

The captain took one touch before hammering his left-footed finish into the same corner he had found with his earlier penalty.

Barcelona went into half-time leading 4-1 after generating an extraordinary 4.43 expected goals during the opening 45 minutes.

The advantage might have been even greater.

Adeyemi won another penalty shortly before the interval, but Raphinha handed the ball to Yamal. Agirrezabala read the teenager's attempt and saved his spot-kick. 

Flick replaced Joan Garcia with Wojciech Szczesny at half-time, giving the veteran goalkeeper his first minutes of the season.

Yamal continued searching for a goal and struck the woodwork early in the second half, while Adeyemi also went close after racing clear.

Racing were handed an unexpected route back into the contest in the 65th minute.

Gerard Martin played the ball back towards Szczesny, but the goalkeeper failed to sense Zabiri closing him down.

The substitute dispossessed Szczesny and rolled the ball into an empty net to make it 4-2.

Barcelona's response was immediate.

Straight from the restart, the hosts swept forward and Adeyemi was brought down by Iker Luque before he could shoot, earning Barcelona another penalty.

Raphinha stepped forward this time and calmly dispatched the spot-kick in the 67th minute to complete his hat-trick and restore Barcelona's three-goal cushion.

The treble took Raphinha to nine LaLiga goals for the season, putting him at the top of the scoring charts at that stage of the campaign.

His work was done moments later, with Gabriel Jesus replacing him.

Yamal thought he had finally found the net in the 72nd minute when he cut inside and finished into the bottom corner, only for the goal to be correctly ruled out for offside.

The teenager remained heavily involved and created Barcelona's sixth goal in the 79th minute.

Yamal weaved his way through several Racing defenders before slipping a perfectly weighted pass towards Jesus, who curled a first-time finish into the top corner.

It was Jesus' first LaLiga goal for Barcelona.

Yamal eventually received his reward in the 89th minute.

Barcelona broke quickly after Szczesny had denied Zabiri at the opposite end, with Adeyemi charging forward and beating two defenders before squaring the ball across the penalty area.

Yamal applied a simple finish beyond Agirrezabala to complete the scoring at 7-2.

Barcelona finished the evening with 6.65 expected goals and broke the five-goal barrier for the fourth time already this season. The result moved Flick's side three points clear of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga with a significantly superior goal difference.

Raphinha was the outstanding performer and received 79 percent of more than 28,000 votes in the post-match player-of-the-match poll.

The Brazilian's transformation into Barcelona's central attacking figure continues to deliver goals, but the victory also demonstrated the range of threats available to Flick.

Cancelo provided the early spark, Adeyemi repeatedly tore through the Racing defence, Yamal recovered from his penalty miss to score and assist, while Jesus opened his league account from the bench.

Six league matches have now brought six victories for Barcelona.

And after another seven-goal attacking exhibition, their title defence continues at a relentless pace.
