Barcelona tightened their grip on the LaLiga title race with another ruthless display away from home, while Atletico Madrid underlined their credentials by brushing aside Girona in a dominant Sunday showing.

Article Highlights

Barcelona continued their relentless charge at the top of LaLiga after claiming a commanding 2-0 victory over Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica, a result that stretched their winning run and opened up a four point gap at the summit.

The league leaders endured a nervy start as Villarreal threatened early, with Ayoze Perez squandering two clear chances that could have changed the complexion of the contest. Those misses proved costly when Raphinha turned the tide in the 12th minute, winning a penalty after being brought down by Santi Comesana and calmly converting from the spot.

The game swung decisively just before the break when Villarreal defender Renato Veiga was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Reduced to ten men, the hosts struggled to cope with Barcelona’s growing control and composure in possession.

Barcelona made their numerical advantage count shortly after the hour mark. Frenkie de Jong’s intelligence and calmness in a crowded penalty area carved out the opening, allowing Yamal to apply the finishing touch from close range to double the lead.

Despite Villarreal registering moments of threat and forcing several sharp saves from goalkeeper Joan Garcia, Barcelona never looked in danger of surrendering control. The visitors managed the closing stages with ease to secure an eighth consecutive league win and further cement their status as title favourites.

Earlier in the day, Atletico Madrid delivered a statement performance of their own with a convincing 3-0 away win over Girona at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.

Diego Simeone’s side wasted little time asserting themselves, opening the scoring in the 13th minute through captain Koke, who unleashed a superb strike from outside the box that left the home crowd stunned.

Atletico doubled their advantage before the interval when Conor Gallagher arrived late in the area to finish clinically following good work from Julian Alvarez. Girona attempted to respond but found Jan Oblak in inspired form between the posts.

The visitors maintained their discipline and structure after the break, frustrating Girona’s attempts to find a way back into the contest. Atletico put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time when Antoine Griezmann added a third, calmly finishing after being set up by Giacomo Raspadori.

The result strengthened Atletico’s push near the top of the table and highlighted their defensive solidity, while Girona were left to reflect on missed chances against a ruthless opponent.

With Barcelona setting the pace and Atletico keeping the pressure on, the LaLiga title race continues to gather momentum as the season heads into a decisive phase.
