Barcelona preserved their advantage at the top of the LaLiga table after edging Athletic Club 1-0 in a tense and scrappy contest at Estadio de San Mames on Saturday night.

In a match that offered very little in terms of rhythm and clear-cut football, it was Lamine Yamal who provided the one flash of true quality, producing a superb second-half finish to hand Hansi Flick's side a priceless three points.

The result ensured Barcelona maintained their four-point cushion over Real Madrid, who had beaten Celta Vigo on Friday, and it also kept their title push firmly on track.

Athletic Club started with more energy and almost forced the breakthrough in the opening minute when Alex Berenguer's low delivery caused panic in the Barcelona box, with Joao Cancelo diverting the ball onto his own crossbar. It was an early warning sign for the visitors, who looked short of sharpness in the opening stages.

The hosts continued to press aggressively and unsettled Barcelona's build-up play, while the visitors struggled to create much in the final third. Ferran Torres had one opportunity from a Yamal delivery, but Unai Simon reacted well to keep the effort out.

For long periods of the first half, the game lacked quality and fluency. Athletic were disciplined without the ball, limiting Barcelona's space, while Flick's men enjoyed possession but did very little with it.

The match remained goalless at the break, and Barcelona needed a change in tempo and invention after producing a flat first-half display.

Flick responded by introducing Pedri at halftime, and the midfielder immediately gave Barcelona more control and composure between the lines. His presence helped the visitors play with greater clarity, while Athletic began to lose some of their earlier intensity.

Even so, the home side still had their moments. Oihan Sancet, introduced at the break for Athletic, came close when he found space in the box, but Joan Garcia was equal to the effort. Another promising opportunity followed when a poor Barcelona pass handed the hosts a dangerous opening, only for the final decision to let them down.

That wastefulness was punished in the 68th minute.

Pedri received the ball in central space and slipped a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Yamal on the right side of the penalty area. The teenager then did the rest, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling a brilliant finish in off the far post and into the top corner.

It was a goal full of class and composure, the kind of moment that can decide title races and tight away games.

Yamal's strike lifted Barcelona and took the sting out of Athletic's momentum. The visitors looked far more comfortable after going ahead, with Pedri, Yamal and Raphinha helping them keep possession and manage the tempo more effectively.

Athletic pushed for a late response, but their final ball and finishing let them down. Alex Berenguer sent one inviting cross through the area with nobody able to apply the finishing touch, while Sancet also tried his luck from distance without success.

Barcelona stayed organised in the closing minutes and saw out the match without allowing Athletic any clear route back into the contest.

It was far from a vintage performance from the Catalan giants, but it was the kind of win that often defines a serious title challenge. In a difficult away fixture, on a night when chances were scarce and the football was often untidy, Barcelona found the decisive moment through one of their brightest stars.

For Athletic Club, it was a frustrating evening. They competed well, pressed hard and had spells where they unsettled the league leaders, but they lacked the cutting edge required to take advantage.

For Barcelona, though, the night belonged to Yamal. When the game needed inspiration, the teenager delivered once again.
