United Cruise Past Sabah

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring before Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko struck late in the first half, while Lisandro Martinez added a fourth after the break as Michael Carrick secured his first Champions League victory as United manager.

It was a professional performance from the hosts, who finished with an expected-goals total of 3.67 compared with Sabah's 0.89 and largely controlled proceedings after overcoming some early resistance.

Carrick made four changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Everton in the Premier League.

Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu and Sesko came into the starting XI, while Luke Shaw was left out of the squad ahead of the Manchester derby and Marcus Rashford started on the bench after picking up a knock against Everton.

Senne Lammens started in goal behind Mazraoui, Yoro, Martinez and Dorgu. Youri Tielemans partnered Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, with Bryan Mbeumo, Fernandes and Cunha supporting Sesko.

Sabah arrived at Old Trafford for their first-ever match in the Champions League proper.

Founded only nine years earlier, the Azerbaijani champions reached the league phase after defeating Hapoel Beer-Sheva 6-4 on aggregate in a dramatic play-off. They became only the second Azerbaijani club to reach the competition proper after Qarabag.

The visitors also made history by becoming the first team to name a starting XI featuring 11 different nationalities in their Champions League debut, while Joy-Lance Mickels became the first Rwandan player to appear in the competition.

Sabah successfully frustrated United during the opening 20 minutes, limiting clear opportunities despite increasing pressure from the hosts.

United began finding greater space as the half progressed, with Cunha testing Stas Pokatilov and Mbeumo becoming increasingly influential from the right.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 27th minute.

Sabah surrendered possession and United transitioned quickly. Fernandes released Dorgu down the left before the Denmark international delivered a first-time cross towards the near post.

Cunha timed his movement perfectly and turned the ball home for his first Champions League goal, putting United 1-0 ahead.

Dorgu's assist was another significant moment in his encouraging United career.

At 21 years and 319 days, he became the youngest Manchester United player to register an assist on his first Champions League appearance since Wayne Rooney in September 2004.

Sabah should have equalised eight minutes later.

Kaheem Parris created space on the right before delivering an inviting cross towards the back post, where Mickels was completely unmarked.

The forward, who had scored a hat-trick in his previous match, somehow headed wide from point-blank range in what proved to be Sabah's biggest opportunity to change the direction of the contest.

United made the visitors pay seven minutes later.

Tielemans started an excellent passing move before Dorgu and Cunha combined to return possession to the Belgium international.

Despite losing his balance, Tielemans managed to find Fernandes inside the penalty area and the United captain calmly side-footed his finish into the bottom-right corner for 2-0.

The hosts then effectively ended the contest on the stroke of half-time.

Mbeumo controlled a long ball superbly before immediately sliding Sesko through on goal.

The Slovenia striker remained composed, rounded Pokatilov and rolled the ball into the empty net to make it 3-0.

It was Sesko's second goal in as many matches and capped a ruthless closing period from United after Sabah had remained competitive for much of the opening half.

Carrick's side entered the interval with an expected-goals total of 2.38 from 13 attempts, while Sabah had managed four efforts and none on target.

With the Manchester derby approaching, Carrick immediately began managing his squad.

Mason Mount replaced Tielemans at half-time, while Andrey Santos and Joshua Zirkzee were later introduced for Mainoo and Sesko.

The tempo inevitably dropped after the restart, but United remained comfortably in control.

Cunha forced another save from Pokatilov before Fernandes also tested the Sabah goalkeeper from distance.

United eventually added their fourth in the 68th minute.

Fernandes took a free-kick quickly and clipped the ball over Sabah's defensive line towards Zirkzee.

The substitute controlled under pressure before producing an improvised backheel towards goal. Pokatilov lost track of the ball, allowing Martinez to arrive virtually on the goal line and tap home.

It was Martinez's first Champions League goal in his 21st appearance in the competition and also his first goal for United at Old Trafford.

Carrick was then able to give valuable European minutes to youngsters Harry Amass and Shea Lacey, with Amass making his Champions League debut after replacing Dorgu.

Sabah continued searching for a consolation and almost found one late on.

Mickels broke clear on the left in the 86th minute but dragged his effort narrowly wide.

Deep into stoppage time, he produced an excellent cross for Orphe Mbina, whose header appeared destined for goal until Lammens made an impressive save to preserve United's clean sheet.

The final whistle confirmed a comfortable 4-0 victory and an ideal opening to United's European campaign.

Fernandes was voted player of the match by supporters, receiving 69 percent of the poll after scoring once and remaining influential throughout the evening.

The level of opposition will increase significantly from here.

United's next Champions League fixture takes them to the Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid, while their immediate focus shifts to the Premier League and a Manchester derby against Manchester City.

For Carrick, though, four goals, a clean sheet and three Champions League points represented almost everything he could have wanted from United's opening European assignment.
