Tusker FC booked their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after grinding out a 1-0 victory over Sudanese side Al Ahli Madani at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
Crispine Erambo scored the only goal of the return leg in the 62nd minute as Julien Mette's side completed a 3-2 aggregate victory and extended their continental campaign.
The Brewers returned to Nairobi with the tie delicately balanced after surrendering a two-goal advantage in the first leg in Kigali and eventually settling for a 2-2 draw.
That collapse placed greater importance on maintaining their concentration in the return fixture, with any victory enough to send the Kenyan side into the next stage.
Mette made structural adjustments to his team, using three centre-backs and deploying Thomas Teka at right-back. Aboubakar Doumbia, who has also operated in defence, moved into midfield alongside Fabian Adikiny and Erambo.
Al Ahli showed immediately that they had not travelled to Nairobi simply to defend the first-leg result.
Wagdi Awad produced an early attempt that went wide as the visitors looked to unsettle Tusker before the hosts gradually began imposing themselves.
The Brewers created one of their first promising openings around the quarter-hour mark.
Doumbia reacted to a loose ball inside the penalty area before setting up Ian Simiyu, whose effort with his weaker left foot found the side netting.
Victor Mbaoma was also heavily involved in Tusker's attacking play, using his strength to hold up possession and attempting to bring Simiyu and the midfield runners into the contest.
Al Ahli almost delivered a major blow in the 28th minute.
A long ball from the goalkeeper was brought under control by Maaz Kondani before Assan Giba unleashed a powerful effort that struck the crossbar and went behind.
It was a reminder of the threat posed by the Sudanese side and the fine margins separating the two teams.
Tusker continued trying to build patiently through captain Abud Omar, Adikiny, John Otieno and Stephen Odima, but clear opportunities remained difficult to create during a tightly contested first half.
The sides therefore reached the interval without a goal, leaving the entire tie to be decided over the final 45 minutes.
Tusker began to find more space after the restart.
Mbaoma held possession well before releasing Simiyu on the left five minutes into the second half. His effort was gathered by Al Ahli goalkeeper Mohammed Abdallah, although the pressure was beginning to increase.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 62nd minute.
Collins Ochieng' sent a sweeping ball forward towards Erambo, who found himself in space and produced the decisive finish over Abdallah to put Tusker 1-0 ahead.
The goal changed the complexion of the tie and moved the Brewers 3-2 in front on aggregate.
Tusker nearly doubled their advantage almost immediately when Mbaoma went close from a set-piece, his attempt passing narrowly wide.
Al Ahli responded through Awad as they searched for the equaliser that would keep their continental hopes alive.
Tusker goalkeeper Perrauld Ndiga was called into action and dealt with the threat, while the hosts' defence remained alert as the visitors began committing more players forward.
John Otieno was also required to make an important defensive intervention during Al Ahli's attempts to restore parity.
Mette freshened his side as the match entered its closing stages.
Abdoulie Joof replaced Simiyu before Mbaoma and goalscorer Erambo were withdrawn for Eric Kapaito and December Dise Kisakah.
Kisakah later created an opening for Kapaito after receiving possession under pressure, but the substitute was unable to produce the finish that would have given Tusker a more comfortable conclusion.
With only one goal separating the sides, the closing minutes demanded discipline from the Brewers.
Joof was booked as Tusker battled to disrupt Al Ahli's momentum, while Ndiga and the defence successfully protected the clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory on the night and a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
It was a particularly satisfying outcome for Tusker after the frustration of the opening leg, when they had put themselves in a commanding position before allowing Al Ahli to recover from two goals down.
This time, Mette's side avoided a repeat.
They found the goal they required, defended their advantage and completed the job in Nairobi to keep their hopes of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stage alive.
Tusker will now face Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars in the second preliminary round.
The next stage will represent another significant test for the Brewers, but progressing from a difficult opening tie provides Mette and his players with valuable momentum as they continue their return to continental competition.
